Stellaris vs Tiva vs STM32F4

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TM4C123GE6PZ

With the TI Stellaris range obsolete, I'm investigating the TI Tiva range and ST STM32F4 offerings. Here are my preliminary observations:

TI Stellaris LM3S9D96

TI Tiva TM4C123GE6PZ

ST STM32F407G

Core

Cortex M3

Cortex M4F

Cortex M4F

CPU clock

80 MHz

80 MHz

168 MHz

Flash

256 KB

1024 KB

RAM

96 KB

32 KB

192 KB

Ethernet

Price (1kU)

$4.44

$5.74

Important for my application is Ethernet and RAM (can squeeze into 96 KB, more will improve Ethernet and display performance). Not sure how good the documentation and community support is for STM32F4, but the performance appears to be much better than the TI offerings. Have I missed something?

They would seem to be showstoppers to Tiva on both counts!

If 96K RAM is a "squeeze", surely 32K is a non-starter? Or am I missing something...

Any reason for not considering Cortex-M3 from other sources...?

I would say support for both is at same level. TI price is lower, new devices will surely follow. In low volume STM might have better offer. In high it depends on your application, TI most likely.

Edit: You should contact TI sales representative with this kind of question.

Cortex M3 or Cortex M4 would be equally suited to my application. Just thought if I'm going to change I might as well go for the new architecture.

  • I am not "compliant/apologist mouthpiece" for forum vendor.  Yet I find your repeated - highly detailed mention of "brand X" - outside the bounds of, "good taste/forum protocol."

Share your frustration - but would not your chart serve just as well - minus the "foreign vendors" name, & part no?

This forum far exceeds any of the other, similar MCU/ARM vendor creations.  (although vendor's participation here - has noticeably cooled {and trends toward "rookie central"})

Suspect that you can make any/all of your points w/out providing, (what may be seen as) "free advertising" for brands: X,Y,Z.  Any "serious" ARM user very likely has such awareness... As clearly does forum vendor...

We should avoid the unwise "provocation" of forum management - draconian "unanticipated consequences" may result...

Happen to share many/most of your concerns - but do request that you consider this broader perspective...

  • Showing another vendor on my chart is crucial to my argument. Ideally I would have liked to include NXT and a few other vendors to get the complete picture, but I don't have the time. If anyone wants to add other vendors to the analysis, please do so.

TI does not live in a vacuum. It must produce parts that are technically, monetarily and availability wise competitive.

I would like to think that any forum is a place to discuss relevant issues. Sure, if was comparing an STMF4 to an NXT micro offering that would be inappropriate. But to compare TI's offering with other vendors is exactly the sort of discussions that forums are there for.

BTW, I'm not condemning TI, I just want them to appreciate the hurt that their decision has made and to urge them to do the right thing by its customers. Just like I assume you do.

  • I would agree that naming competitors and their products is not really appropriate here.

This is TI's own forum. It is owned & maintained by TI specifically for the discussion of their products.

Your point could have been well made without specifically naming the competitor company & product.

A further negative is that these posts will be found by google - and will encourage undiscerning posters to make further inappropriate posts...

    Really?

Specifically for Forum support, there is no competition!

That's now two votes - made by guys somewhat active this forum - since its inception.

The "over detailing" of competitive products runs far counter to your expressed goal of, "free & open" forum.

  • Hardware floating point is a welcome addition.

  • All we need now is Ethernet and at least 96 KB of RAM.
