Customer is at the end of the board integration that base on Stalaris LM4F232 chip. would like to use a LM flash programmer s.w. for burning the firmware to my board. I'm considering the following option:

1. Use JTAG interface - Is there a board that use as an interface between my board with J-tag interface and PC? Can I use the LM4F232HQD evaluation board for this purpose?

2. Use the UART interface - does the f.w. download can be done via UART 0 only? Is there a need for s.w. configuration of the BOOT loader?

Is there someone that I can meet with in order to consult with?

Hello Eli,

1) The LM4F232HQD eval board does not have a debug out (JTAG) out capability. We do have several older Stellaris evaluation boards that could be used for this purpose like the EK-LM3S811 evaluation board. http://www.ti.com/tool/eks-lm3s811

This option will allow you to program an erased device over JTAG, but the EK-LM3S811 is an evaluation board not housed in a case and could be damaged if used in manufacturing/test environment. We have had customer be successful with this.

Another option would be to use TI’s Uniflash to program the device. This support the Stellaris ICDI interface and the XDS emulators that should be more robust in a manufacturing/test environment. http://www.ti.com/tool/uniflash

2) You could also use the bootloader in ROM to use the UART 0 for programming. LMFlashprogrammer will support this. Only UART0 can be used by ROM for the UART bootloader operation. If you would like to use another UART, you would need to pre-program the device with the software version of our bootloader configured for the UART of your choice… however you would not be able to program an erased device with this.

The Stellaris LM4F232H5QD device is equivalent to the Tiva series TM4C123GH6PGE

Thanks for the quick response. Few question:

1. The EK-LM3S811 is NRND, does I can order it from TI?

2. What is a XDS emulator? I have J-link of IAR can I use it?

Yes, the IAR J-Link will work just the same, although this is not supported by Uniflash or LMFlashprogrammer. You will have to use IAR/Segger software with them. Segger also makes a nice production flash programmer: http://www.segger.com/flasher-arm.html

Hi Dan,

Does LMFlashprogrammer has code size limitation? In IAR environment there is limitation of 30KB for the bin file. If the size is bigger there is a need to purchase a dongle.

Believe both IAR and Keil enforce 32KB "C" code size limit...

LMFlashprogrammer is a free utility from TI. There is no code size limitation for the tool.
