Which TI CAN Transceiver for Stellaris M4/Tiva C Launchpad?

Hello, I'm currently using the LM4F120H5QR LaunchPad and I'm searching for a compatible P-DIP CAN transceiver (from TI or another Manufacturer).

The only P-DIP CAN transceiver from TI that I can find is the SN65HVD251 but I'm worried about its supply voltage of 5V. Is the CAN Peripheral of the Stellaris going to recognize the right voltage levels or since the transceiver has 5V supply they won't work together. In case they won't work, can anyone suggest another compatible P-DIP CAN transceiver?

The LM4F120H5QR (now the Tiva TM4C1233H6PM) has 5V tolerant inputs, so the output level of the CAN transceiver is not an issue. The problem is the Vih for the transceiver, which is 0.7 * Vcc (3.5V). The Stellaris/Tiva MCU cannot meet that. If you are unable to find another TI device in the same package, you will need to find something with Vih of 2.4V minimum. After a quick look, I wasn't able to find something that suits your needs, but I'm also not an expert on those devices.

Vih is 2V to Vdd.

Hello Eric, thank you for your answer. I also wasn't able to find a suitable P-DIP CAN transceiver. I will therefore switch to some other package. Do you think the SN65HVD230 is suitable/compatible with the TM4C CAN peripheral?

Yes, that device should work. As another option, we use the SN65HVD1050 transceiver on the DK-TM4C123G which is also in the SOIC package. It looks like the 1050 is half the price of the 230.
