RM48 in different packages

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: RM48L952, HALCOGEN

Hello,

We are using the RM48 CNCD for a while now and we're quite happy with it. We have decided to use its MCU (RM48L952) in a design but the control card has RM48L952 in 337-Ball Grid Array (ZWT) while we are going to use the 144-Pin Quad Flatpack (PGE), so we want to ask if we can use CCS v5 and the XDS100 v2 emulator design (which will be built by us from the schematic here) to debug/program the MCU like we do with the control card? Furthermore, it seems the ZWT package doesn't have the pins N2HET1[21], GIOB[4], GIOA[4] or MIBSPI!NCS[3] which are available from the PGE package at the pins J13, G1,A6 and H4 from the PGE package, respectively. Unfortunately, RM48 Hardware Design Guide only discusses the ZWT package, so we once again would like to as if there are any other major/minor differences between these two packages in terms of programming, debugging or placing to the pcb? In other words, can we use, program, debug, route etc. it the way we do with the control card?

Thanks,

Asa

  • Asa,

From a debug stand point, there is no difference between the PGE and ZWT package. The JTAG interface is the same.
Code Composer Studio will have the same debug capability with the PGE package.

Concerning the pin out difference between the PGE and ZWT, some function are not available in the PGE. (There is type in your original post, the ZWT is a superset of PGE).

Note that the GIOA[4] is not available as pin on the PGE, but still a trigger source for MIBSPI1, 3 5 on event 4. This functionality stay valid across the package.

If you are using Halcogen to develop your application, upon project creation, you will have to select the correct package.
Halcogen will be aware of which pin/resources are available.

Please let me know if I've covered all your questions.

  • When you say "some functions are not available in the PGE", do you mean some pins are not available, thus some ports, or some features of the pins like the enhanced pulse capture of the N2HET1[15]?

  • Asa,

    Yes, that was my point.
