TMS570 Safety demo software fails to run

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: HALCOGEN

We have bought the TMS570 HDK and I'm trying to run the safety demo software. It says it has installed ok. There then comes a dialogue box with some text obscured...

So I pressed PORRST and clicked OK. I then selected the Ambient Light app (although it fails on all) and the next thing I get is this...

I press PORRST again and all that happens is this dialogue comes up again. I cannot get past this point. Was I meant to do something more than just push PORRST in the first dialogue?

Regards

Andy

  • The above message was meant to have two screen shots included, but they were stripped out. So, I've added the missing one here.

  • Hi Andy,

I'm sorry to hear about your trouble with the HDK software.  I've transferred this question to our HDK software expert who should get back to you shortly.

    Paul B.

  • Hi Paul,

by accident I pushed the PORRST 3 or 4 times in succession, then it started to work. So, at least I now know the hardware is working.

I'm now having problems getting any code to build with V4 of code composer. I'm new to CCS, but with the IDEs I've used in the past, if you create a new file in a project they automatically come up with the includes for that variant of micro so that all the registers are accessible. This doesn't appear to happen with CCS, unless I'm doing something wrong.

Perhaps this should be the subject of a new post, rather than adding it to this one.

    Andy.

  • Hi Andy,

Pushing PORRST one time is enough. Can you please tell me the version of your demo code, I will do the same test on my bench? Please download the latest CCS from http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Download_CCS.

  • Hi QJ,

I'm running v3.02.00. It could have been a hardware issue.

  • hi Andy,

U need to run code through CCS5. HDK doesn't support lower version of CCS.

  • Really?

I don't understand why TI would sell the bundle of a HDK and CCS v4 if they are incompatible.

  • hi,

Ya that's a real question. IEven i have no clue.... I also ordered the HDK kit. and surprisingly received CD of CCS3.2!!!  But it gave me error. It's mentioned somewhere on the net (i read but don''t remember exactly where ) that u need to install CCS5. I installed it from net and prob got solved.

    Regards,

    Manmesha.

  • This is unfortunate but I can tell you that we debate this quite a lot.   The CDs are included because it's still possible that someone will get the kit and not have a good way to download the latest software from the internet.

In theory the CD should always work if you install on a 'clean' computer but given you might have already some of the components already installed it can be a real mess to put in a CD with an older version of software.

I personally have learned to not use install CDs from *any* vendor if I can download the latest off their website.  This just seems to be the nature of the beast so to speak.

What would your suggestions be going forward - with respect to CD's.   Would anyone out there be unhappy if the kit just came with a piece of paper & URL saying 'download latest software from this site'?    [ I realize that given this is an *internet* forum - anyone responding probably has no issue w. internet.. but worth asking anyway].

  • Well, I don't know how the law stands in the US, but here in the UK we have a law called 'The sale of goods act', in which it states that anything you sell has to be 'fit for purpose'. You could argue that selling an IDE that is incompatible with the hardware that comes with it, falls foul of this law. So I would suggest this needs to be addressed.

As for the way forward, what Microchip do, is give away the IDE and a compiler with very limited optimisation, if you need better optimisation you have to pay for a licenced version. The programming tool you also have to pay for and, obviously, the more sophisticated tools cost more to buy.

  • Andy,

The latest software to be used with your kit can be downloaded from the following links.

    Code Composer Studio download page.

    http://www.ti.com/tool/ccstudio

    Hercules Safety MCU Demo.

    http://www.ti.com/tool/hercules_safety_mcu_demos

The license included with CCS give you full option on the compiler and debug capabilities.

Please have a try and let me know.

  • Andy,

We do want to assure you that the Hercules Development Kits (HDK) are tested and validated with the software that comes on the DVD(s).  As Anthony points out software will be updated over time and as soon as we put it on a DVD it will basically become out of date.  However, the software included in the kit should work since it was tested prior to release.

One thing we would like to know is what version of the DVD you have in your kit?  Also, was there just one Hercules DVD or did it come with a separate CCS DVD? If so, please let us know the version of both DVDs.  Also, please let us know the part# for the HDK you are using (sorry if you already provided that in a previous post).

Our recommendation is to upgrade to the latest CCS, HALCoGen, and Safety Demos from the web at the links provided by Jean-Marc.  Please let us know if you have any additional problems as we certainly value your feedback and always want to improve our kits.
