On the HDK board you have to push buttons S3 "RST" and S4 "PORRST"

PORRST is the power on reset. This is an input only to the device. It is usually connected to your external voltage monitor and is used to indicate a power on sequence. This reset source to the device will reset everything in the device. (CPU, SYSTEM, PERIPHERAL, Debug logic) This can be viewed as a Cold Reset.
NOTE: If you are in debug session, asserting PORRST will kill and disconnect your debug session. All software and hardware breakpoints will be lost.

RST is a bi-directional open drain reset. If asserted externally, the System CPU and Peripheral will be forced in reset. The Debug logic stays untouched. Also an internal reset (PLL slip, WD, software...) will be visible on this pin and can be used to reset an external chip.This can be viewed as a Warn Reset.

In CCS, you have an option to do a CPU Reset or a System Reset.
The CPU reset is not a real reset. This option will only force the PC back to 0x0000_0000 and the CPSR to the reset value. Everything else is untouched.

The System Reset in CCS is equivalent to the RST pin on the board. CPU, SYSTEM and peripheral will be back in reset state, the debug logic is untouched.

There is in the System module a register (SYS_ESR at location 0xFFFF_FFE4 that provide information about the reset cause. Please have a look in the User Guide at section 2.5.1.48 System Exception Status Register (SYSESR) on page 169.

Thank you. This clarifies a lot but one question remains open: as far as i understand all the reset ways you listed does not completely reset the board because, for example, the content of the program eprom is preserved, so is there a way to completely reset the board so to report all to the factory status, to be sure that none of the previous operation could influence the actual behaviour?

The Program Flash and Data EEPROM are not affected by reset. Once they are programmed, the only way to clear them is to erase the part. This can be done via CCS or using our stand alone Uniflash gui.

In CCS to erase the Flash and EEPROM use the following menu:

This will open the following windows:

In "Erase Option" select entire flash, than scroll down and click on Erase.

The device is back to factory condition.

My "tools" menu does not have the "on-chip flash" voice. Is this a plugin?

Do this operation resets all de devices to de default state too?
