Using EMIF to write to 64mb NOR Flash

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS570LS20216, TMS570LS3137

Hi,

How would you recommend connecting a 64Mb NOR flash to a TMS570LS3137, for the TMS570LS20216 it was straight forward, however it looks like there are strict limitations on the newer device.

Cheers

  • Hi Alan,

The NOR flash interface is the same between the LS20216 and LS3137 MCUs, so the hook-up of the external memory to the MCU is the same. The application software needs to be updated to manage any multiplexing / gating of the EMIF output signals.

Which document are you referring to that includes limitations for this interface?

    Regards,

    Sunil

  • Hi Sunil,

Thanks for the quick response, initially I thought the same however when reviewing the TRM once more I found the overview page 110 indicating that CS2 can only access 16Mb despite an address range of 64Mb, with page 109 also indicating a limit of 16Mb per CS (excluding CS0).  Page 110 also states that any access outside of this range (i.e. in the reserved space) will result in an abort.

While section 17.1.2.1 on page 604 states "The EMIF data bus width is up to 16 bits and there are up to 22 address lines."

    Which is correct?

    regards,

    Alan

  • Hi Alan,

Each asynchronous memory chip select (there are only three) can address 16MB (megabytes) on the LS3137 MCU.

There are 22 address lines and you can use BA[1] as address line 0 when connecting to a 16-bit external memory, effectively making 23 address lines available.
