TMS570LS20206 & XDS510USB+ Emulator

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SEGGER

I'm in the process of moving over from an onboard XDS100v2 emulator (on the HDK) to an external XDS510USBplus emulator, but am struggling to get things rolling...

Upon connection to both HDK and our own custom board (both supporting 20pin ARM JTAG headers), the XDS510 is failing with:

"IcePick: Error connecting to the target: Error 0x80000240/-140 Fatal Error during: Initialization, OCS,  Error generated by SD scan controller module"

Can anyone shed any light on what might be causing this failure? I can understand it failing on our own board, but must be doing something silly on the HDK. I've run SDConfig, but nothing obvious shows up.

Any ideas anyone?

  • Mat,

Did you go through the troubleshooting guide that Spectrum Digital has for their emulators?   That should cover the 'simple' things:

    http://support.spectrumdigital.com/guides/JTAG_Emulator_guide/#4.2

  • Thanks for the reply Antony,

I have to admit, I hadn't read this link. However, it looks like I covered it during general debugging. In particular, SDConfig passes the emulator connection test, but fails the scan diagnostics. Alas no further information was present as to why...

Something of potential concern is that I'm using CCs v5 (latest updates) which Spectrum Digital don't seem to cover on their website - are these emulators actually officially supported on v5? The emulator itself is about 3 years old - bought for another DSP job which never happened, so sat in its box - wondering whether there could be any firmware updates missed for the later targets?

  • Hi Mat,

It's very possible.  With this particular emulator, it uses custom drivers from Spectrum Digital and so SD needs to keep the drivers up to date in order to keep the emulator working with CCS.  I have a similar question as you do about the support status w. CCSv5 - especially since it seems this emulator isn't being promoted.

I'd suggest requesting support directly from SD on this issue.  On the bottom of their home page they have a  'help desk' link where you can login and request support - this is where I'd start after you've exhasuted the debugging information (sounds like you have already).

If you don't have the time to go through debugging the USB Plus and it's easier to spend a few hundred bucks - you could also check out the new options like XDS200 or Segger J-LINK.  Both of these emulators work with CCS v5 and offer a compelling combination of high speed at a reasonable price.
