XDS100 V2 CDC RM48HDK

Hi,

I am using RM48HDK with onboard XDS100v2 without problem.

Next,  I use external XDS100v.2 emulator with the same RM48HDK. I succeed to flash my program.

When I want to use a CDC virtual port to debug, it does not work. I tried several baudrates without success : I got no character.

Are you aware of this ? Any idea ?

  • Zanzibar,

Hi do you mean the  Virtual COM port channel that's in parallel to the XDS100v2 on the HDK?

If so this is only supported with the on-board XDS100v2.

You can however plug USB into both the HDK and the external XDS100v2 and select the external XDS100v2 for emulation but use the HDK's Virtual Com port.

If you want to do this then you need to add the serial # of the emulator that you want to use to connect to your target configuration.   See: Can I Plug More than one XDS100 (WIKI article)

  • Hi Anthony,

I want to test RM48HDK virtual COM port with external XDS100v.2. I do not want to use onboard XDS100.

What I understand is it is not possible in this configuration.

I need to use onboard XDS100 to have virtual COM port.

When I test later my own (proprietary) RM48 board, it will be possible to do virtual COM port with my external XDS100V.2.

    Can you confirm ?

  • Zanzibar,

Yes the limitation here is twofold:

      a) the 14/20 pin JTAG headers don't have pins assigned for "UART"

     b) the external emulator (xds100v2) probably doesn't have a way to hook up the UART channel.

For (b) this would depend on where you buy the emulator.  You could certainly *build* your own XDS100v2 standalone emulator and route the UART pins to a separate header.    The design for the XDS100v2 is posted on the TI Processor Wiki and you can modify.   I think some variants might have UART on another header already.

(I have one from "MDFLY" (ebay) that has extra connectors - not sure what is routed to them though).

You in theory could build / buy an xds100v2 variant w. 2nd header for UART and connect this to the HDK but you'd need to make the connection through a different connector not the 14 pin JTAG.

If you do your own board design w. integrated XDS100v2 then you can make these routes to the UART on the PCB as you're not going through a pre-defined 14 or 20 pin JTAG connector pinout.
