Limitations on Free CCS licence for Tiva C Series EK-TM4C1294XL evaluation board

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: EK-TM4C1294XL, CCSTUDIO, ENERGIA

Need to know what free version of CCS to use for Tiva C Series EK-TM4C1294XL evaluation board, and what limatation it places on development.
Read the Licensing document starting with "We have a number of different free tools options available in CCS.." and it did not answer my question.

Hopefully, this forum can clarify this.

Thanks

  • Hello Viking,

On the CCS Site http://www.ti.com/tool/ccstudio , you can go to Download section:

Use CCS for free - By default when you install Code Composer Studio a free license will be enabled that supports working with development boards with an onboard debug interface, XDS100 class debug probes, MSP430 with 16KB code size limit when using the TI compiler and MSP430 with no limit when using GCC. A 90-day extension for the full featured evaluation license is also available.

  • As I wrote, I read the licence, so little use to copy it verbatim in here as an answer.

Are there any limitation on the CCS downloaded to be used with Tiva C Series EK-TM4C1294XL evaluation board?

A Yes or No, and if Yes, what are they?

  • Hello Viking,

I am using CCSv5.5 and CCSv6 on the LaunchPads and Development Kits for TM4C123 and TM4C129 w/o any licensing as I use the in built debugger or XDS100v2. It should be OK.

If required I can move the post to CCS Forum where CCS folks would also be able to confirm.

    Regards

    Amit

  • Thanks,

...and this is without code size limitations, or other removed features?

  • Hello Viking

Yes, there is no code size limitation, only that some advanced debuggers may not work w/o full license.

    Amit

  • There is no code size limit when working with the Tiva C evaluation or development boards.  The limitations would come if you were to start downloading code to your own custom board with the same processor.

Currently the very inexpensive XDS100v2 which is offered with ARM connectors compatible with the Tiva parts and boards is also unlimited with CCS.  However, TI has implied that this could change at any time.  This basically gives you a full featured IDE for the cost of a $50 JTAG wiggler.

    a full featured IDE

Suppose use of, "full featured" may be expected to include:

    a) operation with multiple vendors' ARM MCUs

    b) accommodation of the newer, more robust (and pin-saving {2}) SWD protocol

Believe IDEs by IAR, Keil are far more representative of, "full featured..."

  • Yes. "full featured" is a subjective term.  A matter of perspective.  Next to Arduino or Energia, Code Composer is very full featured.  I agree, it is not as "full" as the IAR and Keil folks (or others in their league).  CCS also does not come with their sticker shock (not that they are unworthy the investment).

All of the above have a place.

  • Not much, "sticker shock" with "free" versions - available from both major IDE vendors.

The ability to move beyond, "single vendor" is not subjective - especially when the ARM herd (here) is culled (for us) of M0 & M3 - with no published justification...

  • @cb1 absolutely.  The cost of vendor specifc tools is higher than the sticker price.
