TMS570 LS and TMS570 LC differences

A question was asked by management concerning the differences between the LS and LC series of TMS570 parts.


After some digging it appears that it could be related to the either core speed or core type (LS=R4F and LC=R5F).


Can any clarify this for me?

  • LC is stands for lockstep cache,  whereas LS is lockstep (and tightly coupled memory).

    The new LC part has been upgraded to use the Cortex R5F CPU.  The main advantages to moving to the R5F are that a lower latency is possible when accessing peripherals, and there is an accelerator (ie.. DMA) coherency port so you get hardware support for flushing lines from cache if DMA has overwritten the same data in main memory.   The cache is what brings the higher frequency.  Cache is available on the Cortex R4F as an option but we built all the R4F Hercules products with only tightly coupled memory and no cache.

    If you are using HalCoGen for driver generation - you will have a very easy time moving your application; to the point of you almost won't notice the difference.   There are a lot of enhancements to the diagnostics, for example most peripheral RAMs have been upgraded from Parity to ECC and ECC in the core is turned on immediately after reset.

    Is the TMS570LC4357 pin-compatible and with TMS570LS21/31? Is it also compatible at electrical level? (e.g. AC and DC characteristics)

      LC4357 is pin compatible with LS21/31 as well as electrical.
