  • Hi Peter,

Welcome aboard!   There are multiple options for you in terms of toolchains for the hercules family.

You might look at one of our low cost tool options like a launchpad as a way to get started.

    For TMS570 Hercules:   http://www.ti.com/lsds/ti/microcontrollers_16-bit_32-bit/c2000_performance/safety/tms570/tools_software.page#launch

    For RM4 Hercules: http://www.ti.com/lsds/ti/microcontrollers_16-bit_32-bit/c2000_performance/safety/rm/tools_software.page

One of these kits is really all you need to purchase to get started.  They include an on board JTAG emulator (XDS100v2) and there are multiple free or trial IDEs available for you to explore.

Regardless of which tool / IDE you decide fits your needs the best, you should get the free HalCoGen tool.  This is a GUI tool that generates device initialization code and APIs for the peripherals on the device. It also comes with examples that you can get started with.

One big advantage of HalCoGen is that you can let it setup the device and most of the peripherals in a basic mode, and from there you can concentrate your efforts on learning to use the features that are most important to you first.
