Licenses information

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SEGGER

I need to know about licenses. If I want to design and construct a product with ti microcontrollers what do I need in order to be legal. probably a licensed code composer studio but what about the boards can I use an evaluation board to a commercial product? I where can I get these Inform

  • Hello Kyriakos,

    Straight out of the box...

Hi I wish some vacation for our Amit but I got again this in focus for him.

About software you are right but CCS can be used on evaluation tools unrestricted but not on commercial basis where cost is acceptable too.

On board Licence I see this and I fear also a prototype I am using on has to be changed to production so from:

    http://www.ti.com/ww/en/launchpad/launchpads.html

if you choose specific items then on page appear link to standard licensing term and condition:

    example:

    http://www.ti.com/tool/ek-tm4c1294xl#buy

you can find link for this file:

    http://www.ti.com/general/docs/lit/getliterature.tsp?baseLiteratureNumber=sszz027&fileType=pdf

For a one or two pieces are these usable as prototypes or still is limited to restriction too?

On the past Stellaris TFT panel was ready to be incorporated on a custom product, are also these board with possibly a special license?

  • From what i see all the connected board are evaluation board, but the hercules board do not say anything about evaluation board. So if i got it write hercules boards can be used for commercial product. Evaluation board cannot be used, only for research purposes. And we need a CCS with at least one licence.

  •  Hi Kyriakos, IMHO reading these licences I understand commercial product cannot incorporate evaluation board, here are two different point of view, MSP430 come as DIP and can be simply wired on a prototype, TIVA only came on fineline smd and cannot be prototyped then using adapter, lowered cost of pcb manufacturing prevent from making a wired prototype that require more time than pcb so..

For a fast test attaching wire to some other evaluation can produce a test bed in a few time but this is the problem, when we use to test it is working.

To close loop we need Amit or another TI internal clean about Hardware usage doubt.

  • Hello Roberto,

Let me check but AFAIK, it can be used.

    Regards
    Amit
  • Thank for attention Amit, just sorry delay your possible vacation but finally we found some good question to be addressed in a professional way.
  • Well i am confused with your answers. What i need is a 3 section answer.

1)About Ide: Is this enough in order to make a product that can be sold?

TMDSCCS-ALLF01: Code Composer Studio IDE - Floating 1 User Pack (F01)

    http://www.ti.com/tool/ccstudio&DCMP=dsp_ccs_v4&HQS=Other+OT+ccs

    2) Which are the non eval boards that can be used? Give me a list if it is possible.Nor TM4Cxxx nor Hercules RMxx nor c2000 can be used. Which are the modules that can be used?

    3) Tivaware or any other API can be used?Do i have to buy a licence and where can i find them?

Can i get some clear answers?

  • Hello Kyriakos,

It will take me some time to get the right answers to you.

    Regards
    Amit
  •  Hi Kyriakos, for question 2 and 3 we need wait for Amit answer, it is not a simple matter.

About question 1 see also this other way:

Floating permit you use more than one computer one at a time but if you wish to use a laptop you need refer to licence server and this is not so comfortable if you intend to do some on field service.

Another way is to use free licence, are you planning use expensive high speed debugging probes or ICDI, XDS100 fit your need? I fell XDS560 or segger can help more than simple ICDI or XDS100, at last I decided use ICDI with an adaptor due it is better than XDS100.

     From CCS Licensing site:

Use CCS for free - By default when you install Code Composer Studio a free license will be enabled that supports working with development boards with an onboard debug interface, XDS100 class debug probes, MSP430 with 16KB code size limit when using the TI compiler and MSP430 with no limit when using GCC. A 90-day extension for the full featured evaluation license is also available.

  • Kriakos,

Yes, you need licenses for CCS and TivaWare. Both these have ‘click wrap’ licenses when you download the code. You can find them after installation in the install directory for TivaWare, or the doc directory of the CCS install.

There are standard terms and conditions with the EVMs. Go to the  Connected Launchpad page. http://www.ti.com/tool/ek-tm4c1294xl#buy

You’ll find “TI’s Standard Terms and Conditions for Evaluation Modules” directly below the “Order Now”. Similar setup for the Hercules products.

    This is the interesting paragraph.

“EVMs are intended solely for product or software developers for use in a research and development setting to facilitate feasibility evaluation, experimentation, or scientific analysis of TI semiconductors products. EVMs have no direct function and are not finished products. EVMs shall not be directly or indirectly assembled as a part or subassembly in any finished product. For clarification, any software or software tools provided with the EVM (“Software”) shall not be subject to the terms and conditions set forth herein but rather shall be subject to the applicable terms and conditions that accompany such Software”

    Dave

  • Hi David, so term "XDS100 class debug probe" can be inferred as this grant a free use of licence has to be modified or this is valid too? (green middle)
So all Beta test was done I think can be granted by a free licence? ;)
Development time is still in progress and I just hope new version can solve too many issue remaining on actual release.
  • Roberto,

I'm not sure I completely follow your question.

One option for the free version of CCS is "only with an XDS100 class emulator".

Here is a section of the End User License Agreement (EULA.doc found in the doc subdirectory of the free CCS install).

Host License. You may use the Licensed Materials only on a single-user host computer system to generate applications (“Target Applications”) that execute solely and exclusively on processing devices manufactured by or for TI (“TI Devices”) and provided you comply with one of the following options for using the Licensed Materials:

    (A)  Bundled: You debug Target Applications only with (x) an XDS100 class emulator, (y) a development board with an applicable on-board emulator or (z) an instruction set simulator; OR

    (B)  Code Size Limited: You generate limited size Target Applications that execute solely and exclusively on MSP430 processing devices and do not exceed a code size limit of 16KB; OR

    (C)  Limited 90-Day Period: You agree that this Agreement, including the licenses granted herein, shall be limited to a ninety (90)-day period.

    Regards,

    Dave
