Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ENERGIA

hi@all i am new to thios tiva c series board but last month i used it with the proper intructions and software drivers etc all

but after that i am using it now again but if i insert the usb cable to pc there is no changes in the device manager but only the power button is glowing in board rest all buttons if i press also i couldnt find that the board is working or not

pls help me i tried so many times connecting to pc with windows 8 os

  • Hi,

Did it work before at the same PC with windows 8? Try at a different PC and see if you get the same results. Also try a different USB cable.

    - kel
  • pls if any one knows answer me
  • ya i tried but the same problem is occuring
  • What were you doing before it stopped working? Did you power it with an external power supply besides the USB?

Do you have another cable you can test with? Sometimes I had a broken cable that was able to power the launchpad but the data lines were not connecting
  • yes sir it worked on the same pc before but now its not and the upper ic is getting heated up if i connect it for a long time
  • I think I had a launchpad doing that but it still worked (weird). If it heats it means it's probably burned up.

Could you please test with another USB cable and confirm my question "Did you power it with an external power supply besides the USB?"
  • thanku for the reply sir i didnt used any external supply rather than usb and ya i tried with other usb cables but the result is same no changes in device manager i.e no ports or no another device iondication i also reset the device by pressing that reset button but there is no use pls help me sir
  • My bet is that you burned the chip.

Maybe you miss connected something. Maybe you placed the board upside down in a conductive surface. Static electricity discharge can also be a big problem.
Sometimes mistakes happen (and with those mistakes you should learn to not make them later on)

Maybe the board was faulty and after some use the chip burned. Try to contact the distributor from which you bought the launchpad to see if you can get another one to cover that one (if it was actually faulty).
  • how i have to check that the chip is burnt or not because i didnt connected it to any of conductive surface soo pls give me the solution
  • If the chip is burnt that means you need a new one.
The upper IC is the programmer, it's what allows you to program the MCU and debug it. So basically you need a new launchpad.

The IC heating up is a good indication to a burned chip (it's making short circuits inside).
If the board is drawing over 500mA (usually a bit less) then the USB port will not provide any power. If you have a short-circuit then that would happen and the launchpad would not show on the Device Manager but normally the power LED would not light up either. It could turn on just a bit, with less light, with the USB port switching ON and OFF very fast making somewhat of a PWM dimming.

Try one last thing. Remove the jumper on the top portion of the launchpad, it should have the label "VDD". This will remove power to the MCU. Check now the Device Manager. If nothing appears then check the entire board for a short-circuit, a contact connecting to other that shouldn't (even in the ICs pins).

Also, maybe a stupid question: you checked the device manager, but have you tried actually programming it?

Again you most likely will need to get another launchpad.
  • pls reply sir actually its urgent requirement any way that i can clearly come to a conclusion that the board is working good or bad
  • Do note that i answer to you "out of good will". I am not obligated to be here minute by minute (this was an occasion that I was actually able to do that). I was actually writing the reply since it required thinking and a lot of writing and unlike you I do try to write as correctly as possible (grammar-wise and content-wise) which takes time since English isn't my native language.

You type of writing is actually a pretty good example of what most user don't like - lacking effort to put information, answer questions in detail, rush users like they are paid to do this (which even if they were paid you should not rush, your just asking for a incorrect answer that way).

I have already answered your question and with this will be my last response to you in this post.
  • ya sir i tried programming it using energia software but it showing there is no device on that particular comport assigned soo only and i am getting the power led on and even i am getting the 3.3/5 v output across respective pins and the pins are not shorted sir i checked it pls help me sir
  • sorry sir if i wrote anything wrong then i am soo sorry actually i dont no how to post in groups this is the first time i take ur words and correct myself thanku soo much
  • Ok,

Then first don't say things like "it's urgent, reply fast now!!", that type of comment will only discourage users to help. The community members that help other users are here because they want, this isn't their job so you should not treat them like you are their boss and they have the obligation to help you right now. I usually come here, answer a question if I can and come back some hours later or the next day, it's between breaks of my study (I do have lots of exams now).

Also, don't just rush posting. You are only making it take more time! Take time to write because it will avoid more question back and forth. Provide as much info as you can that you think is relevant. In this case I could be exactly what you were doing with your launchpad (using it for a sensor, control motors, powered something, external connections). What shows on the device manager (this one you got it), did you try to program it? With what IDE/program. What you tried to do to solve/find out the problem.
Also answer clearly and in detail all questions even if the answer is "I don't know"! Question: "Is your board version x", Answer" I don't know, how can I check the version on my launchpad?".
Providing lots of info and that you are actually trying to find solutions for yourself it's what you should do - we only assist your effort and inform some things you don't know.

Bottom line we are helping you out of good will and you have to make yourself appealing to be helped and not demand help like we have the obligation to. You have to show that you can provide info and answer questions so it doesn't seem we are doing all the work for you. Also you can show that you are someone that just want the work done for himself (for that I would demand payment). You have to be actively trying to solve your own problem and we just assist in the questions you may have.
Also remember not to rush your writing, here the communication is just written. Avoid making too many writings mistakes it transmits that you were too sloppy. If you had plenty of information about your problem and showed less impatient that would not weight much here, but all that put together shows you are too impatient.

The biggest problem in this post was you rushing me in this case and sometimes skipping my questions and not answering them. But for reference here it is what I think is best for you to pay attention to. Though I believe will have a better comment on the matter of "how to post" as it is something he knows to do much better than most.
