Choosing a Hercules processor for my application

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: RM41L232

I am trying to determine which Hercules functional safety processors would be best for my IEC 61508 application.  So far I am looking at the RM44L520-PGE as it has the smallest memory.  My application does not require a great deal of memory so trying to choose based on cost and available peripherals.  Two UARTS is a must.  Are there other choices anyone can suggest?

  • Philip,

Based on the 2 UART condition, this is the best choice if you need Hardware support.

Another option is to emulate SCI protocol with our N2HET. This will allow you to use a smaller device with only 1 UART, the second one will use N2HET.

With this option, you can pickup a device like: RM41L232

For more information about SCI emulation with HET you can have a look at the following post:

You will find a link for the code and the application note.

  • Thank You for your reply Jean-Marc. I am just getting started learning about these types of microcontrollers. Not sure which tools or programming languages are best to for making a SIL3 IEC 61508 application. Do you have any suggestions how to get started programming a RM series device with the eventual TUV review (and required documentation) ??
  • Hello Philip,
Regarding software tools, please consider the options which we promote from TI and affiliated third parties: www.ti.com/.../tools_software.page

There are also a number of options for software packages from TI and affiliated third parties:
    www.ti.com/.../tools_software.page

In both cases there are some options on these pages which provide development artifacts to support development according to IEC 61508.

Regarding specifics of what you will need to complete a successful functional safety assessment of your system, we are limited in what we can recommend as our support focuses specifically on the TI product offerings. If you are looking for general training and consultant support you may want to consider one of the TI partners in our design network: www.ti.com/.../support.page

    Best Regards,
