Hercules lauchpad external power supply

Hello,

This might seem like a foolish question, but is there a way to power the hercules rm42 launchpad with an external power supply. I have a 7.2V, 1500mA battery that I want to use to power the launchpad. I was thinking of connecting the the 5V pin on J3 column to the external battery through a voltage regulator (UA7805CKCT). I was just confused if this was viable because I wasn't sure if the pin was supposed to output or input 5V. So basically can I just connect the battery to a voltage regulator to the j3 5V pin, and it should power up and work?

Thank you,

Robert Lee

  • Hello Robert,

Hercules-based questions should actually be posted to the Hercules Safety Microcontroller Forum:
    e2e.ti.com/.../hercules

However, based on my knowledge of the LaunchPad platform you should be capable of using an external power supply for your LaunchPad given that such a supply has been bucked-down to a point allowable by the MCU. But you should probably bring this up on the Hercules E2E forum to make sure.

    Good luck,

  • Hi Robert,

The RM42 LaunchPad is powered via the PC's USB port. The pin1 of J3 is 5V output to provide power to the boostpad attached to J[4:1]. I read the schematics, it should be ok to power the aunchpad using external 5V through J3-Pin1 (pin 2 is GND) if no USB cable is connected.
