Hercules Launchpads

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LAUNCHXL2-TMS57012, LAUNCHXL2-RM46, LAUNCHXL-TMS57004, LAUNCHXL-RM42

Are there any Hercules development kits that offer both a CAN controller and CAN transceiver? I see that the Hercules LAUNCHXL-TMS57004, Hercules LAUNCHXL-RM42, Hercules LAUNCHXL2-TMS57012, and Hercules LAUNCHXL2-RM46 all have CAN controller does it also have a CAN transceiver? Can you refer a launchpad that has a CAN transceiver?

  • Andrew,

None of our launchpads have a CAN transceiver on board, but you could add one on a booster pack header or the expansion header.

Jan Cumps - a Hercules Forum MVP - has posted some really great videos on his YouTube site www.youtube.com/.../pitface123 showing how he has used CAN with the launchpads. He's also got a quick and dirty alternative to a transceiver, that's easy to use if you just want to experiment with the protocol on the bench and not really drive a vehicle network immediately. You might even have all the parts you need in your parts bin.

EDIT:  also if you are doing something for work, and you just want a 'canned' solution for CAN,  then you probably want to look at one of the HDKs.   These kits are more expensive but have 2 CAN transceivers on board as well as connectors for them.   You can get to the third CAN controller by adding a transceiver to a prototyping board.   We've got a design package for such a breakout board (HDK Experimenter) that you can just send to a quickturn PCB service, with an ISO CAN transceiver (ISO meaning isolated), and there is also a breakout board available ().
