TMS470M power supply not working

The external power supply does not power my Hercules board, however,  the usb does. When I test the voltage coming from the power supply I can read 16V but the board still does not turn on. I need to board to have higher voltage to drive some circuitry. Is there a way to debug the board's power circuitry?

  • Hi Shabbir,

There are multiple development boards for TMS470M.  Can you confirm which one you are using?  HDK, USB stick, other?

Which TMS470M device is populated on the board?

    Regards,

    Karl

  • Hi Karl,

We are using the TMS470 980 on the Hercules HDK.

  • Hi Shabbir,

We've been discussing this via email as well so I wanted to document the status here for others who might be searching.  Presently this looks like a failure of the power supply which is shipped with the HDK.  The power supply provided with the HDK is a +5v supply but you are seeing it provide +16v.  At this time it is not clear if the HDK itself is damaged.  The input rail on the HDK is rated at +5v to +10v.

You have a second HDK in house as well, so it would be good to see if the power supply from the working HDK can power this HDK.  A bad power supply is a lot easier to replace than a bad board.

One quick thought - are you sure the supply used is from the HDK?  The 2.5mm barrel connector plugs are fairly common and in a few cases over the years I've seen someone mistake a laptop power supply (usually +12v to +20v) for the supply to their board or debugging tool.

    Regards,

    Karl

  • Hi Karl,

We are sure to have used the power supply provided by the HDK. The board is no longer working since when we plug in the working voltage supply it wont light up, however our second HDK does light up with the same power supply.
