How to use Hardware Trace Analyzer with EK-TM4C123GXL and DK-TM4C129x

Hello.

I want to try hardware trace analyzer feature on TIVA microcontrollers. I use for this EK-TM4C123GXL launchpad and DK-TM4C129x development board.

When I tried to use Statistical Function Profiling in CodeComposerStudio 6.1, I've received a message "The specified breakpoint type "Trace" does not exist on this target".

I haven't find information about supporting Instrumentation Trace Module by Stellaris In-Circuid Debug Interface, which is implemented on specified development boards.

So, I have several questions now:

1. Is it possible to use trace analyzer on these boards whithout additional external emulator?

2. Can XDS200 perform this function for TIVA microcontrollers?

3. Which else emulators can be used for this purpose with TIVA microcontrollers?

Hello Vyacheslav,

We are working on an application note for JTAG and Trace which would answer most of the questions. But in the meantime
1. ICDI does not support Trace and an external Trace emulator is required
2. XDS200 can support the function
3. Keil uLinkPro has been tested with TM4C129 for System Trace.

Hello Vyacheslav,

One update after some of my team members checked was XDS200 may not work. I would be inclined to shift focus to Keil.

Hi Amit,
The referenced Keil emulator ( Keil uLinkPro ) is quite expensive. What is the most cost effective emulator that will support these profiling features for the TM4C129 and specifically w/ the DK-TM4C129X? I was really hoping that the XDS200 would do the job.

Very limited from XDS. Keil uLink and IAR I-jet Trace are the options.

What about an XDS110?

I was able to use the on-board XDS110 emulator on a MSP432P401R LaunchPad, along with CCS 6.1, to perform Statistical Function Profiling on the Cortex-M4F based MSP432 device via SWO trace so guess that an XDS110 should also allow Statistical Function Profiling on a Tiva device. However, I don't have a standalone XDS110 and the right cables to try on a Tiva device.

Hello Chester,

I am not sure if XDS110 emulator on the MSP432 LaunchPad has added TM4C12x family of devices. But due to the fact that both have Cortex M4F CPU, it should be possible. This would be only SWO trace and not ETM trace.
