TM4C1294 launchpad interfacing with NI Lab VIEW.

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ENERGIA, CC3200

HI..

I want to interface my launchpad (TM4C1294 XL)  with Lab VIEW  for sensor data capturing and analysis. Plz guide me how can i interface these two items by using Energia (preferred). my task is very simple i just want to read sensor data by analog port of launchpad and draw graph by using lab view.

  • Hello Vaibhav,

And in what format does LabView expect data?

    Regards
    Amit
  • Hello

TM4C1294XL comes with a virtual serial port in it. It means that, when you connect it to your PC (using the DEBUG USB connector of your Lauchpad), your PC will have a new COM port, which will show up as Stellaris Virtual Serial Port (COMxx).

That port is UART0 in your TM4C. You can send data to your PC using the TivaWare library, with functions such as UARTCharPut(). Of course you will have to first read whatever sensor you are dealing with, treat the value and convert to something that suits your communication. I prefer not to use ASCII characters (it is a waste of resources to transport numbers as a string). Further, before sending anything via UART, you need to properly configure the port (also easily done with TivaWare, just look for UART examples).

Data sent by your LaunchPad will be available in your PC. On your PC, inside LabView, you will need to create some sort of COM_PORT device instrument (it's been more than 5 years I don't deal with that program). For the virtual com port, I suggest you use 115200 8-N-1, probably the fastest speed the hardware will be able to handle.

Since there's a big chance your LabView program will not work at first and will show nothing, you need to make sure you are actually receiving something in your PC first. Use a terminal program for that. I use FoxTerm, with which you can "see incoming serial data in your screen" easily.

Good luck with your "very simple task".
  • Thanx for reply sir, your info is really useful for me....any other suggestion for this task???
  • Sir i m not getting your point...
  • Hello Vaibhav

As Bruno mentioned (broke the fun), LabView has a COM port application. You would need to interface the TM4C Com Port to the NI's LabView call for COM port. I would strongly suggest searching Lab View documentation first on COM port interfacing.

    Regards
    Amit
  • Amit,

No intention to break the fun :)

Myself and probably everyone else here has undergone a lot of pain to learn everything involved in embedded programming.
When TI decided to create TivaWare (*Ware for what it matters), the aim is surely to make easier the life of customers who intend to use their products. Among such potential customers are us, readers of this forum. TivaWare is a great too, by the way.

On the philosophical side of things: There's always that judgement: shall I share the painfully learned tricks? Or shall I let this folk burn his fingers a bit longer? I'm tended to believe that TI's wish is that more people get their questions replied here, so that maybe they become successful developers and end up buying more baked silicon from Texas... So I learned to use this forum more often, and when possible, to share some experience. There's amazing and useful knowledge here!

On the other hand, we of course have to avoid replying everything right off the head, otherwise people will forget how to research, and will become lazy - "just ask those folks at the TI forum!" Further on that aspect, I find impressive the amount of repeated questions and doubts that land on these pages... I believe there's a need for a structured compilation, some sort of big wiki or tutorials like Luis Afonso has been trying to build. TivaWare documentation and Datasheets are just too formal and far from real live, despite indisputably important.

Finally, enough with Easter thoughts, back to the original thread:

LabView is cool and funny, but it doesn't seem to be the tool for engineers to analyze data. If you just want to see a needle moving in a VU meter, great - but how expensive is it to convert that into a final product? Is your company basing all the PC interfaces on LabView and ready to invest on the licence costs to distribute it? Fine!

If charts and measurement analysis is what you need, then "Math" programs are probably harder to begin with, but more adequate. The main commercial product available is also extremely expensive when it comes to package and distribute an end-user interface, or even to work inside the lab. The "poor cousin" Octave might be an awesome tool for data plotting and related calculations, I strongly suggest to try it, if sensors and numeric processing is your cake and your pocket is not that deep.

    Enough! Cheers.

  • Hello Bruno,

Well said, The norm on the forum is to what ask engineers/hobbyists what they want to do. The only precondition is that the forum members

    1. Do not supply code based on every request: we share our learning, ideas and experience
    2. Do not entertain product feasibility requests. Bring in your understanding and we shall rationally criticize-debate-develop the correct method

    Regards
    Amit
  • hello Bruno Sir

Thanx for your kind reply... with the help of your answer i have successfully interface my TM4C1294 with NI Lab VIEW. This is a mile stone for me and i am very happy to do this. Now i want to try to draw real time graph with sensor values which comes from launchpad.

    thank you sir

Hi Bruno, I am of your same opinion and sometime lazy people attack who is just providing hint than ready to use solution... This forum is dropping down its level try using engineer to answer lazy student questions. This is not only bad but worst, this is not e2e, this is a time and resource waster.

In alternative an internal product (GUI COMPOSER) it is greater to do this but it is not so simple to use as not it is Lab View... I don't wish give away for nothing or sometimes for bad word my experience, I think this forum get fallimentary and forever acquire someone asking to do work to others than help on how to do.

This case we can just leave here wait to see how simple is this quite hard task. When provide some result useful to others then help can be applied to with some stepping rate.

Hi Amit, just this question touched me, so when I discouraged people coming here with the idea of substituting multicore DSP with a TIVA it was bad entertain about data rate and computing power required then give doesn't be useful DSP chip cost less than TIVA?

I remember at almost two in the past...

Engineer to engineer has to be split from student and hobbyst, this due to industrial perception of quality and service. A good hobbyst can be better than an engineer but this has to prove due to culture and passion. Luis (not really an hobbist) is great and his knowledge is growing a lot. Other are just coming to hit some key...

  • Dear Aquino - If you don't have anything to contribute, please don't post.

Amit (or any other "authorities" reading); The above post is the first post in a month in this forum for this Aquino, and the contents can't really be interpreted as anything else than an attempt to tease/provoke mr. Roberto Romano. I hereby publicly condemn such behaviour and vote for removal of this Aquino from our forum for good - in my opinion he has proven himself to bring no joy to anyone here.

Don't worry Veikko, if this is TI wishing this here asking to have code done for free, give TI the punishment it need. So it has nothing to contribute? No it has a lot to contribute raise down forum level, I was here to compliment Amit, the good people here I was happy to meet and I am unpleased see so burdened by so much traffic than continue design new feature of his creature is supporting with a so huge passion and kind to all.

Here are good person and kid never understand when is time to avoid attack or comment wrong way.

Veikko again thank for intervention but please don't waste your time, just ignore. I also suppose I migrate away from TIVA but I promise try don't forget friend.

I also gifted away TIVA LP to my student and CC3200 too, I suppose it can be happy and Luis can get other fellow on its site. When hardware is ready if it sell I think migrate away platform.

Anyway exam session is approaching so we can see again near July when I shall happy to see how Amit and all friend here are.

Hi forum friend, I wish all you good.
