Higher charging current on the USB Host Port

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: HALCOGEN, TUSB1105, TPS2540

Hello,

This question is for Hercules Board RM48L952ZWT.  It appears that the USB Host port on this board is configured as a SDP which only allows charging current of 500mA.  I'm looking for ideas to make it a CDP to allow higher charging current for i.e. a tablet or phone.  Is it possible?

Thanks

Derrick

  • Derrick,

Do you want to modify an HDK for higher current or is this a question for a board you are designing?

TI does make higher current USB switches ... but I'm not sure about trying to retrofit an HDK with one.
(would it be worth the effort?)
  • Hi Anthony,

This is a question for the board we are designing. I was hoping I can just change the configuration on the TUSB1105RGT (U13) on HDK so we do tricks on D+ and D- lines. If we use a different TI USB switches, that means we won't be able to use the Halcogen USB drivers, correct?

    Thanks

    Derrick
  • Hi Derrick,

It shouldn't mess up HalCoGen because the drivers in HalCoGen are for the device -- the host drivers you have are coming from Micrium I believe, and the host controller is an OCHI standard controller. There are registers inside the controller that manipulate the power switch.

Are you looking for something like this chip to maybe put in front of the TUSB1105?

I don't know much about it - but I'm sure we can connect you with an expert on the USB power switches - there's got to be an e2e forum for that product...
  • Hi Anthony,

I'm actually thinking to put TPS2540 right after the TUSB1105. I'll do more research and maybe seek help on the Power Interface forum.

    Thank you
