(Beginner Question) How to communicate with the microcontroller from computer using USB?

I want to communicate with it (control it, start, shut down, start a specific program) That is what I am asked to do in my project.

Next step (just to know) I want to read data exported by the MCU to a custom software on my PC (i.e developed in .NET). I want to develop stand-alone software.

I have one thing to ask about also,

I am going to include the MCU in a tool that I will give it to the end-user/customer. So, I do not want the end-user to use the CCS at all. I want to develop a stand-alone/customized software (maybe using .NET technologies). Can I do control the MCU from a non-CCS method? And, can I transfer data through (send/receive) using a non-CCS method also?

At early stages, I might be guided to use the MS-DOS console to do that. That is OK for me as a start because I want to achieve that goal in sequence of small steps. Later on, I will continue developing that work as the customized software having user interfaces and so on.

First, you need to define the instrumentation functions you need to control your system. Secondly, you need to define the format of command/data, and the processing method to achieve the instrumentation functions. Then you can decide what physical interface (UART, USB, Ethernet, etc) to use.
