Cortex-M4

Hello everyone,

I have a question about the Cortex-M4, I've read that " the Cortex-M4 processor is a low-power processor ", what exactly is meant ?

Thank you

regards

Khatib

  • "Exact" meaning (always) hard to find, massage & present. And - who defines, "exact?"

Usually such broad description references "general" other processors - although the M4 is more normally classed as a controller.

MCU manual - far to the rear - lists the power requirements under various operating conditions. You may then compare/contrast against other vendors' devices - or different versions, here.

Vendor's MSP series is their, "lowest power" offering - although not an ARM.
  • Hello Khatib,

You must look at Cortex M0 and M0+ from processor architecture for low power. Other than that cb1 has nicely summed it up.

  • Btw, there is the MSP432 which could be considered TI lowest power ARM

Like cb1 said, who can say what's exact? The term seems to be used like any manufacturer wants even though there are different class processors with more or less power consumption.
You could say it's a "low power processor" since it's distinguishing it from other processors like a x86 or a ARM-A and that is ideal for a Microcontroller. You don't see a ARM-A9 in a MCU (it's not even made for that purpose).
