using IAR I-jet with DK-TM4C129X dev kit

I have been running my TI dev kit via the ICDI USB port until now, but just got an I-jet debugger from IAR and am trying to configure things to work with it. I changed the Project Options/Debugger settings to use "I-jet/JTAGjet" instead of "TI Stellaris". But when I try to download my code I get an error saying "Fatal error: Couldn't power up the target board - probably a shorted circuit."

I have tried all combinations of jumpers on J11 (none, 1-to-2 and 2-3) and get the same error regardless. Any idea what I need to do to get the I-jet working?

The I-jet can only supply 420 mA of current, so it may be that the board is drawing more than that. I could not find any mention of current draw in the dev kit's user guide.

Hello Dave,

Did you connect the JTAGjet to the J1 header? Also can you verify if the pinout of the JTAG header on the Debugger matches that as expected on the DK-TM4C129X

I did connect to the J1 header. I eventually tried plugging a USB cable into the ICDI port to supply power, and was able to download using the I-jet then. So it does look like it is a current draw problem. Any idea what the current draw for the board is? I am planning to buy a 5V supply to plug into the barrel connector at J15.

Hello Dave,

May be high due to the LCD Panel. Can you remove the LCD power jumper and then see if it works?

I removed the jumper on J35 and it still fails.

Hello Dave,

So it is not the LCD Panel. You may need an external 5V supply or the USB Cable to supply additional current. I am not sure but the current rating is generally the max current not steady state max. The TM4C129 at 120Mhz takes ~110mA. If nothing else is connected then the debugger should be able to provide that much current.

It is also possible that debugger is not providing 5V for other functions on the board and may be causing an issue.

I ordered a 5V supply from Amazon just now. We'll see if that fixes things.

If a Launchpad or eval board from any vendor is around - such may prove a faster, "means to check." (ideally these boards are not "current hogs" - and you've downloaded IAR KS if another vendor's eval board is "in play.")

Our firm uses IAR & J-Link - but prefer pods/probes from Segger. IAR tech support may prove useful/helpful, too...
