TM4C1294 dev_cserial Virtual COM driver

I'd like to get the usb_dev_cserial example working on the ek-tm4c1294xl board but I'm having trouble getting the USB listed as a virtual com. Currently, when running the dev_cserial example, I see the USB listed as a USB Composite Device. The device status states "This Device cannot start. (Code 10) {Operation Failed} The requested operation was unsuccessful."

Below is a screenshot of how the device shows up. I've manually tried to update the driver by pointing it to the C:\ti\TivaWare_C_Series-2.1.1.71\windows_drivers folder and selecting the cserial.inf but I get an error message stating "The folder you specified doesn't contain a compatible software driver for your device. If the folder..."

I also ran the TI RTOS version of this example, usb_dev_serial, and that one worked as soon as I pointed it to the same windows_drivers folder I tried earlier. Screen capture below.

The usb_dev_bulk example is working correctly but I need a virtual port. Any help on either fixing the driver issue with the cserial example or adding a virtual com to the bulk example would be greatly appreciated.

Can you remove the cserial.inf and replace it with the same driver as the TI-RTOS?

I'm not sure I understand. The TI-RTOS driver I used

When I Uninstall the driver and then rerun the cserial application, Windows automatically installs the driver. If I attempt to manually update the driver by picking either usb_dev_cserial.inf or usb_dev_serial.inf I get the message from Windows stating it's not compatible with the hardware, please see below.

This was the same method I used to install the TI-RTOS driver. Please let me know if I'm doing something wrong.

Hello Juan,

When uninstalling the driver, make sure you delete the driver as well in the pop-up box.

Hi Amit,

Can you please clarify what you mean by deleting the driver in the pop-up box?

Also, thank you for the link to the other forum post. Before posting the top question I tried disabling signature verification. Doing this was the only way I was able to get the usb_dev_bulk example to work. Immediately after running that bulk program I tried running the usb_dev_cserial example but I got the same issues I got before disabling signature verification.

Is there anything else I can check or do to force the correct driver?

Thank you for the explanation. Unfortunately I don't have a similar option in Windows 8. I did a quick internet search to find an equivalent method for Windows 8 but found nothing. Please let me know if you have any other recommendations.

Amit,

Do you have recommendations on how to remove it from the SystemRegistry? I've tried rebooting it but that didn't fix the issue.

As I said it is not recommended and hence I have not tried it. But it does work when done correctly. You may want to search it up on the net

Hello Juan,

As I said, I have not tried it. Also as a try can you check if there is a Win 7 machine with any of your co-workers that can be used to check the validity of the drivers and if they work as expected and it is a Win 8 issue only.

I found the appropriate registers in the Registry Edito at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB

I deleted the entry that matched the hardware ID on the launchpad VID_1CBE&PID_007. When I reran the cserial example I got the same error from the original post.

Did you check the other test to perform on a Win 7 machine. I am not sure how better can I help you (surely i do not have a Win 8)

I found similar issue on Windows 8. But It works on a XP machine (Didn't try Win 7).

Hope a new driver for Win 8 will be release soon.

Hello Amit,

I was able to find a Win7 machine to test against and it worked on that machine. Unfortunately my end product will need to run on a Win8 machine. I ended up using the non-composite USB init function and that's working better in that I now see an actual COM port in device manager.

Do you have examples for the TM4C1294NCPDT that use the USBDCDCInit() function or any USB example that's less complex than usb_dev_cserial, something functional similar to the RTOS version?

There are other examples like usb_dev_keyboard or usb_dev_bulk that you may want to evaluate from TivaWare.

Thanks Amit. I had tried the bulk example some time ago and noticed it doesn't create a COM port.

My end goal is to transmit data between the MCU and host PC. I was successfully using UART and already have a program that transfers data via a COM port. For a few reasons I switched from UART to USB on the MCU and now need to get the same functionality. I can use the bulk example but I just need to find out how to exchange data between the MCU and PC. Can you please explain how I can do that or point me to where I can find out?

BTW I just ran the keyboard example and I also don't immediately see how I could get data exchange.

The Bulk example is the method to transfer data via USB. It would not create a COM port but would rather native USB calls to send the data between the device and PC. But besides that the fact that Win8 does not work is a more severe problem right now.

Only for the Tiva example usb_dev_cserial does Win8 not work. Running the bulk example I see the board listed as a TivaWare Bulk Device. Also, if I modify the cserial example to use the non-composite init function I do see a Tiva COM port in the device manager.

I'm not familiar with USB in general so I'm not sure what a native USB call refers to. Do you have additional information on doing that on both the MCU and the host PC?

Hello Juan,

I do believe this is got something to do with Composite Device Driver in Win 8. Surprisingly this is a new one so could be an OS update. Did you check MSDN for composite device issues (if they have listed)

Hi Amit,

I did look to see if Microsoft had any patches or updates but didn't find anything. I don't think I actually need to get the composite device driver to work though. With your suggestion of using the USB as a bulk device I now have two options, use the non-composite version of the virtual COM or use the bulk device example.

I'd like to test against both to determine what will work best for me but I'm new to USB and don't really know how to work with bulk devices. Can you please point me to possible examples for the host-side? I've read the relevant parts in the TivaWare USB Library but still have a number of questions.

I forgot to mention that the USB driver issue seems to have been fixed in Windows 10. We've only tested on one machine but as soon as Windows 10 was installed and the same program was run the host PC detected it as a virtual COM.

Must be an issue in Win8 that MS does not want to put out...

As for the example there is the usb bulk example D:\ti\TivaWare_C_Series-2.1.1.71\tools\usb_bulk_example that you can use as a reference.

I've looked through the example and the relevant sections in the USB Library documentation and was wondering if there was any additional information elsewhere, specifically on what to do on the host PC side.
