The "timeliness" of your notice - is itself - perhaps even "more" noticeable.
The change in status of "LM3S" has been long (several years) and repeatedly reported in the electronic press, multiple trade journals, and of course here...

Although the LM3S817 is NRND, it is not LTB as evidenced on its product page: "ti.com/product/lm3s817". Many of the early LM3S parts are still in production to support existing designs. I suppose LTB will come along some day.

Not "much" of an alternative for those "size constrained" applications - in which the 48 pin QFP "just" fit!
Perhaps new acronym, "NRRA" (Not Recommended as Real Alternative) can be coined...
Do note that vendor's Amit is causeless - thus blameless - in this (now) rather ancient matter...
