My TMS570LC4357 HDK Board is producing extreme heat.

Hi TI,

I am using TMS570LC4357 HDK board. For the last six moths I was having no hardware issues with this board.

But two days before, I don't know waht happens, my boards is producing extreme heat when I power it.

So I suspect like anything was getting shorted or one of the component in the board may failed or damaged.

If I figured it out specifically, I may can recover my $:199 development board.

Any hardware expert please help me.


Here are my observations.

1. As soon as I power my HDK board, Component Number - U27 (FT232HL) and Component Number - U39 (TPS73733QDRBRQ1) are producing heat and gradually temperature is increasing. But TMS570LC4357 is working fine only (I can see the wave form in scope!). But within 5-8 seconds, TMS570LC4357 Controller also starts to produce heat. As soon as TMS570LC4357 is started to produce heat, TMS570LC4357 keeps on resetting.

2. U39 IC is the Low-Drop-out regulator with reverse current protection. Since this IC is getting heated, I suspect that something related to hardware issue is occurring when I power the board and hence FT232HL and TPS73733QDRBRQ1 are producing heat and it affects TMS570LC4357 Controller immediately after 5-8seconds.

Please anybody help to recover my board. Can I try replacing these U39 or U27 or both with the new one?

    Hi Karthikeyan, 

    I am sorry hearing the heating problem on your HDK. Can you please do the following tests?

    1. Voltage at TP15 (1.2V), TP17 (3.3V IO), TP19 (3.3V PLL), TP20, and TP22 

    2. current across the R140, R141, R142, R143, R144 (0.02ohms resistor) 

    3. Voltage at TP12 (5V)

    4. If you only use the USB to power the board, does U27 get heated? If you use 12V VDC at P1 only (unplug the USB power), does U27 produce heat too?

    Thanks for your fast reply.

    FT232 is producing heat after I power the board with 12 V adapter. But My colleague said that FT232 IC is at Warm State so that only it is producing heat (not much high). So I thought FT232 is working fine.

    I did measuring the Voltage and Current value at all those Test points and occurred with the following result.

    Voltage value at  test points 22 and 23 is keeps on increasing by 0.00050 V. Within 6 - 7 Seconds, Voltage at TP22 is increased to 5.05736 V.(Of course it is not a big change.) But still At this time TMS570LC4357 is extremely hot. After this much increase I disconnected the power immediately. And U39 also very much hot.

    My colleague said that FT232 IC will normally produce some heat as it is working. So FT232 is not a problem. Problem is with U39 and U36 I thought.

    When test U39 alone, Supply pin of U39 is having stable 5V and Output Pin of U39 having stable 3.3 V, but still this is the IC which produce much heat and then only TMS570LC4357 starts to produce heat.

    If you need still more details, please ask me.

    Please help me to recover my board.
