USB-RSxxx converter on TIVA C Series Connected Launchpad

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TM4C1294NCPDT

Is there a way to make USB-to-RS232 or USB-to-RS485 converter on Tiva C Series Connected Launchpad?

For example, assign EN0RXIN/EN0RXIP as input/output pins for RS interface and make Ethernet act like RS-232 or RS-485 port?

As I see from doc on TM4C1294NCPDT they are fixed and no pin mux/pin assignment possible, but I wonder is there a "dirty way"...

  • Hello Gregg

You would be probably looking for the Serial to Ethernet TI Design.

  • Hello Amit,

No this is not quite the solution I was looking for, but thank you for pointing to the nice design idea.

The general idea I was thinking of if is usb-to-serial adapter with ability to monitor data flow on second serial device

Here is what I was thinking of:

    +---------------+          +-----------------------------+        +---------------------------------+
    |RS-232/485|<----->| [ifEth]   TIVA C [ifUSB] |<---->| [ifUSB][COM5] PC Host  |
    | device         |            | Conn. Launchpad      |          |              [COM6]                  |
    +---------------+          +-----------------------------+         +---------------------------------+

where PC Host can send and receive data to COM5, and, as optional, monitor sent and recieved data flow on COM6. Something like usb_dev_cserial example, maybe. If using Ethernet connector for this is impossible, I should use free GPIOs, I guess...

  • Hello Gregg

I am not sure based on the block diagram how the Ethernet device is communicating directly with a RS232/385 device. There must be an adapter?

It should be possible to bridge Etherent to USB.

  • Hi Amit,
As replacement of DB9 connector, RJ-11(phone)/RJ-45(Ethernet) connectors are also applied to RS-232/422/485.

    Greg,
The Ethernet socket on the launchpad has isolation magnetics between the MCU ports and the socket pins. The socket isn't available for RS-232/485.

  • Hello Tsuneo,

But in this case the poster seems to be interfacing a Ethernet Interface to RS232 (and not just a socket)
