Need to buy 500 to 1000 LM3SB96 or LM3SB92

I know these are out of production but until the replacement product is ready we need to purchase 500 to 1000 LM3SB96 or LM3SB92 processors.

Thanks

Bill

  • Hello Bill,

I think LTB is over. But if some vendor like Digikey or Mouser have some in stock you may want to check with them.

  • I'd suspect that few - if any - of those (long) EOL devices sleep w/in (standard) disty confines.

You may do better to search among the (very) specialty distys - who often make opportunistic such component buys.

Bring your wallet - thick/heavy - supply & demand will NOT be kind to so, "Late in the game" purchase...
  • Hello cb1,

My last search with disty's did not reveal stock, unless they have got returns from customers.

    Regards
    Amit
  • Hi Amit,

I was not speaking of "normal, well known" disty channels.

Specialized distributors exist - often "buying up" all available "LTB" so that these may be "profitably" (handsomely) resold - down-line...
  • The sharks *ahem* brokers also buy up stock not needed by manufacturers that no longer need them. Often for an eol product that's stock bought by the manufacturers to tide them over until a replacement is made or their own product is no longer needed.

You can end up paying considerable premiums for such parts. Be careful that you deal with someone reputable. And sometimes parts are simply no longer available.

  • Indeed - (some) specialized distys are noted by "dorsal fin breaking" the ocean's surface.   And it must be admitted - that some (especially military component types) - have long, well founded (and clean) histories.

It is possible to make money by focusing upon the "Leading Edge" (say M7 MCUs) OR the "Trailing Edge" (EOL devices, say this vendor's past M3). We've observed that smart, focused, trailing edge firms often do quite well...

Care & great diligence must be exercised.   Missing the many vendor, "announcements of doom" subjects this buyer to a mixture of uncertainly, risk & (usually) very high prices... (NOW clearly is a terrible time to make such "buy!")

  • And:

Beyond EOL electronic components - there are industries devoted to the, "Repair and/or Replacement/Duplication" of past equipment - no longer (conventionally available.) My firm has long replaced past, "Command/Control (usually w/Display) Systems" where the replacement must be as direct & transparent as possible - and properly accept & co-exist w/past vendor's operation & software!
  • And some products have a very long shelf life but at such low volumes that re-design is not practical and often each sale is expected to be the last. As such they tend to get built as-is until some critical part is no longer available.

  • Thanks guys. I kinda knew the answer when I asked the question but I promised I would try.
  • Sorry about that! From your past appearances here - you're too smart to have enabled this disaster.

Guilty party (he who ignored and/or moved in S...L...O...W....Motion to devise replacement) should face court martial. Friend/poster Robert - I am told - has hangman's noose... (yet those are built in low volumes - and dorsal fins (again I am told) break the surface w/in Robert's (otherwise) pristine Great Lake...)
  • You have my sympathy, there is little pleasure in the Cassandra role.
