Tiva C Microcontroller Running hot

My Tiva C is running very hot recently (not sure why), even though I executed different programs (ex. blinky). I have removed the R9 and R10 resistor couple of month ago but I have only encountered this problem recently. I have also checked for short-circuit but I cant find any at the moment.

Is this problem caused by removal of R9 and R10 resistor? If so, how does the removal of those resistor cause the microcontroller (the one in the center of Tiva C) run hot?

Yes I am. That is same as the Tiva C, correct?

Hello Saeed,

I would suggest changing the launchpad. A number of factors result in device degradation and debugging them is sometimes more challenging. Also do check if that there is any external circuit that is connected to your board, you run the experiments after removing all such connections.

Hello Amit,

The Tiva C was indeed damaged so I replaced it. Thank you for that.

But, I had another question regarding the valid stack range of this particular microcontroller. During the run-time my program gives a fault interrupt which i think might be due to stack overflow. When I analyze the NVIC_FAULT_STAT it gives 0x00001000 which is a stack bus fault. The main stack pointer register reads MSP: 0x1FFFFF98. I'm not sure if this caused by stack overflow since I cant seem to find the valid stack range in the datasheets or user guides.

As far as the processor is concerned the valid stack range is by the the available RAM (if the stack overflow occurs the stack may overwrite the heap / global variables before a stack bus fault occurs).

In a Tiva C the SRAM starts at address 0x20000000 and so if the MSP reads 0x1FFFFF98 when a "stack bus fault" has occurred it means the stack, which grows down, has decremented below the start of SRAM and therefore suggests a stack overflow.

If your are using the TI ARM compiler with a bare-metal application, see Finding out static stack usage for a utility which can help determine the stack size required for a program.

Hello Chester,

Yes, I actually tried to use "cg_xml" plugin but it seems like its available only for CCSV4? Or maybe already included within the CCS6 but with a different name? Anyways I just increase the stack size of my program by 50% and so far I did not encounter any fault interrupts.

The cg_xml plugin for CCS was only available for CCSv4. I remember trying, and failing, to get the plugin to run under CCSv5 - see Code Generation Tools XML Processing Scripts Plug-in for CCS (CG_XML_CCS) not working in CCS5

The work-around is to call the cg_xml utilities directly from the command line rather than from in CCS.

As Chester mentioned, the size of the stack may be insufficient for the application and the step that you have taken is the correct approach.
