Crystal selection for TMS570

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS570LS3137

Hello Madam/Sir,

I have some queries concerning crystal selection for TMS570LS3137 Microcontroller. As per datasheet it should be from 5MHz to 20MHz and on TMS570 HDK, 16MHz crystal has been used.

Is there any specific reason for selecting 16MHz crystal and not any other for e.g. 5KHz, 20KHz...etc. ?

Is there any specific value of crystal frequency that i should go with for our design, that TI recommends for better performance or PLL stability of TMS570?

Thanks.

  • There is no specific reason why TI chose 16MHz for the HDK. The flexibility of the PLL makes it possible to achieve most operating frequencies with almost any value in the range 5-20MHz. The PLL lock time is a function of the divided crystal frequency. You can minimize PLL lock time by using a higher frequency and a low NR divider. 16MHz is an easy frequency to generate the 80MHz needed for FlexRay with low jitter.
