program protection

Is it possible to retrieve the program stored in the flash

  • The question is a bit vague, but assuming you mean can the binary be retrieved then the answer is yes. That's how verify is done when programming the flash.

  • Taking the title of this thread into account, one might assume the question is about readout-protected Flash. That raises the suspicion of activities which are non-legal in many countries.

However, such a poorly framed question begs for an appropriate answer...

  • Such a "poorly-framed" question may (better) beg for, "better framing."

Firm/I see poster's "Protection" as his main thrust - and NO! such sub 10 (USD) MCUs have only the most primitive protection against skilled, equipped, determined and resource-laden individuals/groups - who seek the MCU's code.

Governments & large business - near daily - report breaches.   If the sub 10 (USD) MCU offered protection - would they not flock toward its usage?

Disrupting JTAG or similar may (maybe) delay a "not too experienced 4th grader" - but offers NO CREDIBLE DETERRENT to those who WANT your code!

Didn't want to set the O.P. / anyone on this track. For a decent amount, companies in some eastern countries even offer to do this for you ...

  • Well - if one (really) wanted SECURITY - could not an (unsecured) server be placed w/in a closet - surely we're told that, "Would be Safe!"
  • I gess that would fall into the (broader) category of "security by obscurity"...

  • We're told - while NOT recommended - it IS Gov't sanctioned!
  • Government - the finest, brightest, most honest and altruistic men of the country, that only serve their master, the people. Aren't they ???

But back to the topic - it seems the O.P. finally lost interest. Either because something not-so-legal was involved, or he realized it was the wrong forum again (like his MSP430 cycle count question here...).

  • Not the first time: You, Robert (and unlikely) moi have chased one away...

At the moment - two are "holding me up" - one shoe's come off - and I'm being hustled into my limo - (feet dragging) for short trip to my daughter's. (or was this (another) dream sequence...that MSP430 cycle count surely will help...)
