EK-TM4C123GXL: suitable medium cost lcd display

Part Number: EK-TM4C123GXL
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: STRIKE

I am chaitanya,

can someone suggest what all types of LCD DISPLAYS are compatible with EK-TM4C123GXL launchpad?

  • Would not you begin such a search by surveying the "TM4C123 accessory kit marketplace?"

Surely monochrome, character displays so qualify - in fact they meet (even) low cost needs.
Next would be mono graphic displays - most often requiring an 8 bit data bus and several GPIO. (some strobed)

Color TFT and/or OLED units complete the (bulk) of your selection efforts - yet we are unable to "sense" your definition of "medium cost." Note that this class MCU - minus a full, effective, dedicated Graphic LCD output port is usually confined to smaller TFTs. (those QVGA (320x240 pixel) or smaller.)

Cost savings from "orphaned units" - often found on the "net" - usually will lead to frustration once you (overcome all of the design challenges) only to discover that particular model has "disappeared!" Purchase from a "main stream" supplier - at a bit higher cost - avoids that headache...
  • can u suggest some particular display,it will be helpful for me
  • Indeed I could - but (some) "bit-guiding" input from you would aid that effort - would it not?
  • For those interested - I've created a NEW POST which shows "typical" candidate displays for use w/TM4C123 & similar MCUs.

Have you seen the BoosterPack Checker from which you can find display booster packs which are compatible with the EK-TM4C123GXL ?

    E.g.:

  • Poster Chester can be counted upon to, "Dig for data" and provide a thoughtful reply.   And - he's done just that - here.

That said - rather severe limitations are imposed upon ANY USER adopting a, "Display Package" designed to MATE w/a highly specific Eval board.    Should the connection points FAIL to mate w/the far more popular LPad - what then?   (LPad - by far - is the volume leader!)

And - how possibly could the Display Package designers fully/properly anticipate the signal & functional requirements of SO MANY Users?   As a (predictable) result - pins "required" by the user's application may have been (INSTEAD) dedicated to the Display Package - forcing a "witch's brew" of Eval Board "hacks" or (even) eliminating key capability.

Convenience (Plug-In) is a feature - yet it comes w/a downside:

    • high cost (as compared to "raw" display)
    • loss of MCU's pinout "flexibility" (user confined to pins/functions NOT "captured" by the display)
    • use limited to this particular eval board - ONLY!   "Hack-City" otherwise!
    • horror awaits if trying to adapt to another MCU - especially one from another vendor...

As a long time Biz Owner/Engineer w/in the Display field - I'd vote for UNIVERSAL over "Pre-Designed Package" ALWAYS!    (in the event user's "Strike Gold" w/their application - User creation of "their OWN" such Display Package will, "Save a Fortune" and BEST ACCOMMODATE their precise needs!

  • Note that the fact that a certain boosterpack is not compatible to one MCU does not imply that the display ain't compatible either. Usually, there is "always a way" to connect a display to a TM4C mcu!

Since I was looking for current 2x20 LCD options on major distributors just last Saturday, it does not hurt to mention this part numberL NHD-0220D3Z-FL-GBW-V3, which seems to be highly available currently.

As for "medium cost", it would be nice to learn have some kind of target reference to try and help...
  • Would it not prove "more efficient AND lower cost" to go to the (real) supplier of that 2x20.   Middle men/firms extract a price - do they not?

You appear to have (started) to defend the "booster-pack" concept - yet then shift (abruptly/alternately to, "connecting a display" - which highlights the GREAT LIMITATION (and far higher cost) of any "pre-packaged" (solution.)    Not to mention the EXTRA (really the BOOSTED) "time & effort" to "FREE the Display" from its "SO Restricted" CONNECTION packaging!

Indeed would. As mentioned, it was a quick major-US-distributor search for a 2x20 LCD, and that p/n is what came up as a reasonable choice. Particularly LCD displays is one item that I don't think we ever sourced from Digi, as they tend to be much less costly going direct to the manufacturer's local rep.

But it is an interesting situation: when you (recently, if I still qualify as such) hopped to a different country and need a few pieces, spending more money at major web seller costs less than figuring out who to talk to locally - you cant do that for EVERY family of component needed!

  • In all probability - a large Taiwanese display vendor (name begins w/W) actually manufactures that particular display.

(neither DK nor the vendor your part number suggested is the "real" source...)

And has a celestial body on the end of the name as well?

  • Be still (very still) my heart!    With your cleverness, effort, focus & mastery of "intercontinental move" - world should be yours.
(but only if you can beat my firm to Luis!)
