I edited the title of your post to help other people find this information when searching.

I assume from you question that you need to read some flash location that was initialized outside of the scope of the program that is doing the reading. That is, you don't have a symbol associated with that location. You can define a symbol to point to a specific location like this:

#define BOOT_STATE *(unsigned int *)0x80000

my_function(void)
{
   unsigned int state;

   state = BOOT_STATE;
}

I do believe that's true of flash as well. Admittedly the EE functions are friendlier.

One thing to note in either case is that the maximum write times are unusually long.
