CCS/TMS570LS1227: Are notification functions needed when not used?

I have seen that in every online tutorial for Hercules micros, (like this one, for instance, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOBWhFE0LZg ) they always declare notification functions, even if they are empty. Is this really needed?

I have skipped that step a few times and the program compiled and run successfully, hence my query.
