EK-TM4C123GXL: Unable to install ICDI drivers. Have tried all possible documentation.

Part Number: EK-TM4C123GXL
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UNIFLASH

Hi I have the configuration as shown in the attached screenshots. I have been trying to install the ICDI drivers but I have been unable to do so

I have followed this

e2e.ti.com/.../554843

The issue is that I never get anything to display on my device manager

I don't get the message that the drivers are not installed

Any fix for this?

  • Hello Nicholas,

What OS are you using? Win 7? Win 10?

Are you not getting any errors or notifications at all when trying to install the drivers? Anything Windows pops up regarding this would be helpful to see.

You are using the driver from here: www.ti.com/.../stellaris_icdi_drivers right?
  • I am using Win 10.No I get no pop up when I insert the USB cable.i am using those drivers which were provided on TI website
  • Hello Nicholas,

When you try and manually update the USB drivers in DriverLib, what does Windows report back?

I need to know what errors Windows is giving you when you try the recommended procedure if I am to have any chance at being able to suggest how you can solve the issue.
  • I do not understand your question, the issue is that Windows does not report anything when I plug in the board. Nothing even appears on the device manager. I tried a workaround using Stellaris from the legacy hardware settings but it was of no use. I will try to put in more information later.
  • Hello Nicholas,

Do you have a green LED lit up on the LaunchPad? (Should be right near the USB connection)

Can you use a different USB cable? I've seen a few posts where a defective USB cable causes issues (including those shipped by TI...)

In Device Manager, do you see any devices with yellow warning symbol under "Other Devices" or "Universal Serial Bus controllers"?
  • Hi Ralph, The Green LED does light up. The cable issue I am not sure of, I will see what I can do about that. Regarding Device Manager, that is what I have been saying,it is not appearing either in Device Manager or USB Devices.
  • Hello Nicholas,

Is the screenshots you posted from your device manager? If so can you install any driver software for this?

I'm not sure where those device manager shots are coming from but it didn't seem to be from our app note...

  • Hi I tried the application note, but I was not able to see any devices under the Other Devices. Also this Stellaris which you have shown in the screenshot that is from the Add Legacy Hardware option in the Device Manager. Whenever I try to update the device software for the shown screenshot WIndows responds saying the software is up to date. however this is not true, because Keil cannot detect the device.
  • Hello Nicholas,

I have no knowledge of Keil, can you please try with Code Composer Studio and see if the device is recognized with CCS?

I searched but haven't found any other instances of this issue occurring since TI released updated Windows 10 drivers in January 2016.

If your device isn't being recognized properly, it could be a faulty cable or even a defunct LaunchPad board.

I'd try out both a new cable and also seeing is CCS (or even just Uniflash) can recognize the LaunchPad.

Another possibility could be to uninstall/delete the TI drivers completely and then try to re-install them? I don't know why there is a "Stellaris Device Firmware Upgrade" option in your device manager - haven't seen that before - so maybe a step like that could help remove that and get the drivers correctly installed.
  • Hi Ralph,

My problem is solved. It was a very silly misconfiguration, but I would have never looked into it if it hadn't been your help. I will explain it

So there are 2 ports to connect the USB cable to the board DEVICE and DEBUG . All this time I had connected the cable to the DEVICE port , so it was not detecting the drivers. I changed the cable to the DEBUG port and voila everything worked perfectly and I was able to install the drivers. Thanks a lot Ralph.
  • Hi Nicholas,

No problem! Sorry I didn't think of the simplest solution at all haha. I'll have to remember to ask about the USB cable connection in the future :)
