XDS100v2

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LAUNCHXL-TMS57004, TMS570LS0432, LAUNCHXL-F28069M

Hello.

I am building a custom board for TMS570LS0432 micro-controller. I have previously worked with the LaunchPad Evaluation kit LAUNCHXL-TMS57004. I have access to the schematics and design guides of the Launchpad and Hardware development kits of this micro-controller and am using this as the reference for building my board. I have a few queries regarding the JTAG Emulator XDS100v2. I would be very grateful if you could kindly answer these queries.

Question 1)  XDS100v2 consists of FT2232 and CPLD chips that work together. FT2232 converts the USB signals to JTAG and CPLD is used for protection and smoother functioning of the emulator. Is it possible to eliminate CPLD from the emulator and retain all the debugging features and complete functionality,as before?

Question 2) If no, then why is it, that some of the other LaunchPads such as LAUNCHXL-F28069M do not have a CPLD chip on them, while the emulators used on them are also XDS100v2?

Question 3) If yes, is the TI product, XDS100v2 JTAG Debug Probe (14-pin TI version) suitable for my application?  Are there other alternatives that you would suggest?

Question 4) If the CPLD is a necessity, are there any XDS100v2 products that you can suggest which have a CPLD chip on them or is my only option to build the complete XDS100v2 circuit as per the schematics given in the Wiki page?

Thank you in advance.

  • Hello Kartik,

Given your parallel thread inquiring about the XDS110, is there still a need to evaluate these questions? I am not an expert on the components used for the emulator devices, but suffice it to say that the implementation used on the Launchpad is specific to the Launchpad and I think that the CPLD +FTDI has something to do with implementation over the USB port and enabling the virtual com port through the emulator.

Given that it would add cost to your board to include the emulator on each and every production part (either via actual components or, at least, space if non populated for production), I would recommend going with an external emulator as you seem to be evaluating. The TMS570LS0432 Launchpad you are using also has a location for mounting a JTAG header and utilizing an external emulator. This should provide some guidance on schematic content for the JTAG header. The XDS110 offers several options for JTAG header adapters so you can select the one that makes the most since for the amount of space you have available.
