RM48L952: Profinet support for Hercules processors

I have a customer who requires Profinet in a SIL-3 application, so I would like to check if we have driver support for this protocol either directly from TI or a 3rd party ?

If not do we have any collateral for a design using AM335x + Hercules to achieve SIL-3 ?

    Hi Bob,

    We don't driver to support profinet on Hercules devices. I might be a solution to use AM335x + Hercules. I forward this question to our safety manager to comment.

    As QJ mentioned, we don't have any direct support for Profinet on Hercules and I think there would be potential performance related obstacles in doing so.

    Although, we have had discussions with one of the 3rd party assessors on the topic of pairing Hercules with an external chip such as the AMxxx device or an FPGA and it is acceptable to use an external device to implement one of the industrial protocols and be the host and then funnel the safety related tasks to the Hercules device for handling by a safety device. So this part is achievable. However, we do not have any reference designs or sample code to do this as of today. In general, the safety related message or task would be communicated to hercules via SPI, UART, or CAN and then the Hercules device would either perform the task or insure the AM335x performed it within the given time frame.

    I know there has been a project where they have implemented an Ethercat host using one of the AMxxx devices with C2K and this has proven effective for normal applications. Personally, I would like to see a similar implementation with hercules and AMxxxx including Profisafe, FSOE, or OpenSafety but this has yet to be commissioned.

    FWIW, if you ever consider upgrading your future PROFINET platform with PROFIsafe, please do not select any C2K devices (I guess by C2K you mean the C2000 series) since they will not be able to run the PROFIsafe stack. Select the Hercules instead.
