TMS570LS0432: CAN hardware for TMS570LS0432

Part Number: TMS570LS0432
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN65HVD234

Hello.

I am building a custom board for TMS570LS0432 micro-controller and have a doubt regarding the transceiver hardware for the CAN pins. According to the launchpad schematics, there is no hardware connected to the CAN pins and these pins are connected to the male header pins directly. However in the schematics of the hardware development kit , the transceiver SN65HVDA541 is present. The Technical reference manual also says that additional hardware is required for CAN Pins. (Please find the relevant images attached below)

My doubts are as follows:-

1) Is the transceiver hardware necessary?

2) SN65HVDA541 is a 5 volt transceiver. Is there an 3.3 volt alternative (Eg:- SN65HVD234) to this  5 volt transceiver, that i can use ? Because my board currently needs only 1.2V and 3.3V supplies and a separate 5V supply will have to be provided just for the transceivers.

Thank You.

  • Hello Kartik,

    1. Yes, the CAN transceiver is required if you want to communication with other CAN nodes on CAN bus. If you want to make 2 CAN nodes on the same PCB board to communicate, you don't have to use the transceiver.
    2. Yes, you can use SN65HVD234 without any problem.
