Hi,

I want to interface SN65HVD251 CAN transceiver. the TM4C129 VDD is 3.3V, PA0 & PA1 are used for the CAN tx rx.

The SN65HVD251 operates at 5V, so the Tx & Rx are at 5V level. can this be connected to PA0 & PA1 of MCU directly? or will i need a level translator ?

Hi NIthish,
Please check the VIH in the transceiver datasheet. The VIH is 0.7*5=3.5V which is higher than the MCU I/O output voltage . Like the transceiver output to the MCU to higher than than the MCU VIH. You will need a level shifter.

You can also take a look at transceiver like SN56HVDA540 www.ti.com/.../sn65hvda540-q1.pdf where you do not need level shifter.
