MCU Selection for a communication moduel

Hi All,

We have a requirement with the following communication interfaces:

  1. Local RS232 communication
  2. RJ45 for remote communication (Ethernet SNMP Interface)
  3. RJ11
  4. 4 line display

This communication MCU shall be interfaced with the main MCU.

Any suggestions on selecting the communication MCU please..

Thanks,

Ijaz Fazily

  • Hi Ijaz Fazily,

I think a Tiva C Series MCU such as the TM4C1290NCPDT will best fit your requirements, please refer to the TIDM-CONNECTED-ETHERNET.

    Regards,
    Ryan
  • If your RS232 communication is to be "Local" (as is stated) would it not prove to your advantage to label that as "UART communication" - which if short enough range - may "escape" the requirement for "RS232 line drivers" - required at each end?

A reasonably "standard" "4 Line display" (assumed 4x20, 4x16 etc.) is close in size to 2.2-2.4" TFT module - which while well able to present "4 Lines" - impressively adds the capability to present many more lines (easily 12), and color, and graphics - at (almost) the same cost/size!

Apple - long ago - "proved the value of graphic & color" - the "world" well noted... (perhaps too ... your user-clients.)      Such may warrant MCU selection - beyond that suggested...

  • Dear Ryan,

    Thank you for your suggestion.

I checked Tiva C Series MCU. We may not require such an high end MCU. Is there any MCU available in which built in MAC-PHY?.

    Following are the requirements:

    1. Built-in Ethernet support
    2. UART
    3. SPI
    4. EEPROM
    5. External Flash
    6. 4 line character LCD
    7. Firmware update feature

    Regards,

    Ijaz

  • Thank you very much for your suggestion.
  • Hi Ijaz ,
I think TM4C129 device will fit your requirement. We also have a lower end device, the TM4C123 but it does not have built-in Ethernet and EPI interface for interfacing with external memories.
