TMS570LC4357: Need help with proper MCU and practical applications for electric vehicle

Part Number: TMS570LC4357
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS320C28346

Hello. I am master course student of Microprocessor and Power Conversion (MP2C) Laboratory. I am currently working with national research institutions and a company. The contents of the project are to develop the control board and inverter board of the HVAC system(electric compressor- 3 phase permanent magnet syncronous motor- , PTC heater / using voltage : 380Vdc both) for electric vehicles, and will be applied to actual mass production. I am developing using TI's MCU, but I've been ordered to change the MCU by a national inspector. Its because most automotive products use Freescale's MCU products.

In order to refute this content, I'm asking to TI.
1. Is there any case where TI's MCU is used in a vehicle?(similar to our case) If so, please tell us the name of the controller manufacturer, using part, and MCU model.

2. Is there are a low-cost model(Automotive Qualified) for less than $ 20? (The current designed circuit is using TMS320C28346)

  • hello Jaeman,

Hercules is ARM Cortex-R4/R5 based MCU family for industrial, automotive, and transportation safety. TI MCU family supporting functional safety systems built on 20+ years automotive safety experiences. It has many hardware safety features, such as lockstep, CPU self test, RAM self test, RAM and flash ECC,  et cetera. These hardware safety features will help reduce the time and effort our customers spend in SW development.

Hercules MCUs provide a large scalable platform with devices starting at 128KB Flash up to 4MB Flash and performance options from 80MHz up to 330MHz. Devices in the same package are pin to pin compatible. All devices use the same peripherals.  In addition Hercules provides the necessary safety documentation, tools and software to make developing functional safety applications easier.

Extensive collaterals available to help customers and ease certification effort:

    1. HW/SW development processes certified by TÜV
    2. Each MCU individually certified by TÜV SÜD – ISO 26262 and IEC 61508
    3. Safety Manual and FMEDA tool
    4. SW compliance support and compiler qualification kit
Even though NXP, Infineon and Renesas claim IEC 61508 support, no certificate (Process/Product) could be found publicly.
  • Hello Jaeman,

To add to QJ's comments, Hercules and the the devices from which the Hercules products grew out of, are used in ABS, Airbag, EPS, BMS, Electric Vehicle Drive systems, and autonomous Vehicles . In addition, our devices are used in many Railway, Aerospace, and even Space applications.

With our engagement in ABS we believe that we are the market leaders in this market segment as we have engaged and are used by almost all of the worlds largest ABS manufacturers.

Also as QJ has mentioned, the Hercules product line offers a significant amount of materials to aid in the Functional Safety certification by our customers. This set of materials includes Safety Manuals, Safety Analysis Reports, and FMEDA that is customizable to your specific mission profile, HAL code generation application/tool, Compiler Qualification Kits, Safety Diagnostic Library (for implementation of diagnostics described in our safety manual), and Certification Support Packages (to qualify the TI supplied/generated code for use within your functional safety application.

Freescale/NXP is one of many companies that produce parts in the automotive industry but they are certainly not the only one and I believe that our Functional Safety offerings are as strong as those provided by any other company. If there is a need to have a discussion with your "inspector" we would be happy to discuss the attributes of Hercules and convey our story to them. If you would like to pursue this, please private message me using this E2E and we can arrange for a webex and conference call to present an overview of our products.
