TMS570LS1227: Motorware/InstaSpin FOC support for safety MCUs?

Part Number: TMS570LS1227
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MOTORWARE, DRV8301

Dear all,

we need a BLDC motor driver solution, what should also get a SIL-3 certification. In the past (around 2012), TI sold a TMS570 kit with support of Motorware/Insta Spin. These kit is now now longer available, and from the documentation, it looks that motorware only support Piccolo MCUs. What would be the suggestion for a sensor-less BLDC driver with FOC for a safety application under a cost(BOM) pressure?

Regards,

  • Hello Michael,

The motorware was developed based on TMS570/RMx control card and DRV8301. The control card and DRV8301 kit are no longer offered. DRV team is working on the motor control code for TMS570 + DRV3205. Will check the status for you.
  • Dear Wang,

the availability of a hardware Eval kit it one thing. But this is not what scares me. My worry is, that the software support of the Hercules MCUs is generally gone out of motorware. I have installed motorware and if i look into the folder structure, and there are only folders for f28x and subfolders for f2802x, f2805x, f2806x.

My understanding is, that the Piccolo MCUs have coprocessors (CLA) for motor control, and Hercules MCUs dont have those coprocessors. If now motorware is build around the CLA coprocessors, Hercules MCUs cant be supported. Even Hercules MCUs are supported somehow by motorware, do they then support instaSPIN FOC and instaSPIN MOTION?

If there is no motorware support for Hercules MCUs, are there any reference designs or application notes to get SIL or safety certificate for Piccolo MCUs?

    regards,

  • Hello Michael,

The motorware you downloaded is for C2x MCU. The motorware for Hercules was removed from the ti.com since the Hercules controlcard and DRV8301 kit are not supported anymore.

The Motorware for Hercules MCUs doesn't require CLA. Hercules has a module called high-end timers (N2HET) timing co-processor with up 40 I/O terminals. It is programmable, and microcode in NHET RAM executes independently from the main CPU. The N2HET is used in motorware for PWM signals.

DRV team is working on the motor control SW using TMS570 and new DRV parts.
