EK-TM4C123GXL: IICDC 2017- How to reduce power consumption of TM4C123GXL to uA during hibernation

Dear sir,

We are trying to integrate BQ25505EVM-218 energy harvester to TM4C123GXL. Since it is a development board, currently the current consumption is higher (around 12 mA in Hibernation) with all peripherals in OFF state. However, according to datasheet, the specified current is 2 uA. Due to its high current consumption, the energy harvested is unable to drive the TM4C123GXL. For the current IICDC competition, we tried to validated theoretically on whether BQ25505EVM will be capable of driving the processor and found feasible, but in realty the power consumption is higher. Kindly provide me some solution for reducing the current consumption of TM4c123GXL to uA.

Hello Sai,

Unfortunately, the extra current draw you are noticing is from the ICDI hardware on the TM4C LaunchPad which will not operate in low power settings, so you will get a current draw from them when measuring with the LaunchPad. This is due to the LaunchPad design not including a means to separate the ICDI from the MCU so it is not possible to measure the 2 uA current levels on the LaunchPad and there is no solution to get current consumption to uA on the EK-TM4C123GXL LaunchPad.

I will note that many MSP430 LaunchPad's do offer the ability to separate the ICDI from the MCU, so depending on your needs, that could be an option for you.

Hello Saikiran,

You'd either have to cut traces or desolder the ICDI MCU, both of which would prevent you from programming via ICDI. I wouldn't recommend this.

Hello Ralph, I have just one more question. Can I desolder after programming my final code? Will it work after removing the ICDI?

Hi Saikiran,

It would work but you'd lose the ability to reprogram it from ICDI... I strongly advise you do not take that step unless you have some other means to program the device in the future such as a JTAG probe.
