EK-TM4C123GXL: "Could not initialize target device! please power cycle the board and try again"

Part Number: EK-TM4C123GXL

The board "TM4C123GXL" till morning it worked fine, I had used and did some LED show. After, I am unable to download the code to board, I am using KEIL IDE and the message prompt is "Could not initialize target device! Please power cycle the board and try again". Is that means I have to buy new one or go for another vendor(in case braked board) ?

Hello Gohith,

You may need to unlock the device via LMFlash Programmer: www.ti.com/.../LMFLASHPROGRAMMER

Give that a try and see if debug can be restored.

If you continue having issues, it may be good for you to download CCS (it's free) just so we can get an error message that we understand as we don't know enough about KEIL to understand what could be wrong.

Hello Gohith,

Go the Other Utilities tab and in the middle is Debug Port Unlock. Use the top option and then carefully follow the prompts. You may need to try a couple times.

Hello Gohith,

Which USB port do you have the USB cable plugged into? What is the switch position? Is there any LED's lit on the board?

switch position is ON, LED is ON, USB (power and emulation) top left corner (right side) next to power switch

Hello Gohith,

Hmm, that is very odd to me then. It sounds like it's connected right and the Debug Port Unlock process should help solve that issue. Can you post a screencap of the following:

1) LMFlash Programmer when the error message appears?

2) Your Device Manager where we can try and see if you have Stellaris In-Circuit Debug Interface installed properly?

Hello Gohith,

You haven't checked the box for the TM4C123 option for Debug Port Unlock. You need to select specifically which device families you need to unlock. Try making that selection.

Also in the Configuration tab, do you have TM4C123G LaunchPad selected?

I had done by marking for Tm4c boards and this is the output got and yes it was configured for TM4C Launchpad

I am trying the other way by installing CCS by TI , but I wonder why the TI LMFlash programmer says the same.

That looks much better! Just power cycle and try programming again.

If it still fails, then your board hardware is okay and it has to do with compiler or program.

It just means turn board power on and off... plug and unplug the USB or flip the switch if both USBs aren't plugged in...

Yes I tried that, but the problem continues (in this case will use CCS instead of KEIL IDE)
So, There is no HARDWARE problem right ?

Hi Gohith,

I can't say 100% for sure until I see a CCS error which I can crosscheck for prior incidents with but I highly highly doubt it's hardware once the board unlocks correctly because that means JTAG is working and the device is working.

Hello Ralph Jacobi,
I tried that too and no positive result and I am losing hope (anyway my knowledge on embedded systems is little), Is there any way to restore my device to factory settings (as brand new) ? so that I will continue to learn.

Debug Port Unlock sets it to Factory settings.

What did you try and not have a positive result with?

I felt KEIL IDE is flexible than CCS, So I used KEIL IDE much and by seeing TIVA C series workshop I had did trying downloading some example codes through CCS . Some port com error.

If factory reset possible and is it safe ? ( felt better idea than spending half of day for this issue still no good result)

Hello Gohith,

Have you tried loading an TivaWare examples? That way we can know the software is good too. In other words, if TivaWare example loads but the workshop doesn't then something is messed up with workshop software.

The Debug Port Unlock is a factory reset and it is safe. It resolved the error you had for other users.

Hello Gohith,

I haven't got feedback from other tests I asked about... The main one right now is, can you try flashing a TivaWare example like Blinky with KEIL? And also with CCS? Trying both after doing the Debug Port Unlock to ensure the board is in a good factory state.

Trying to figure out where in the programming chain the issue is occurring so I can offer more advice...

Hello Ralph Jacobi,

I had tried with KEIL IDE and CCS following are the pics of errors, please look at it and suggest advice. In KEIL IDE "couldn't initialise "error

and from CCS "Error connecting target"/"unable to connect target".

I installed CCS and "NewTargetConfiguration.ccxml" file opened at the time of debug and this error showed up at the end.

Hello Gohith,

It looks like you are using a handmade project, that is not a good starting point to verify if the hardware is okay.

Please use a TivaWare example such as blinky for your LaunchPad.

You can get TivaWare from: http://www.ti.com/tool/SW-TM4C

The example projects can be found under [Install Path]\TivaWare_C_Series-2.1.4.178\examples\boards and then choose your LaunchPad to see the list of projects.

You can import the project on CCS by going to 'Project' --> 'Import CCS Projects...' and then Browsing to the correct folder.

I've been trying to find other root causes for your issue. Can you post an image of the BoosterPack w/ USB plugged in?

Also trying testing the JTAG connection via Page 26 of this app note (FYI just a few pages above that section has details on Unlock w/ LM Flash if you need to try that again): www.ti.com/.../spma075.pdf

Hello Ralph Jacobi,
I am very thankful for your patience.
I have to mention this earlier, A general DC motor was connected to 3.3V pin out from board(then the LED on board went dimmed). Is that the cause of problem?

Hello Gohith,

It could well be. The MCU isn't designed to drive a motor. You usually need some sort of IC or circuit to provide the current required for motor operation. If the board works without the motor attached that would definitely be why. Look into motor drive relays.

Hello Gohith,

If the board works without the motor connected I would say it probably is fine still, but moving forward you need something like a relay between your motor and your LaunchPad to drive it correctly and allow the LaunchPad to operate as expected.
