TM4C1292NCPDT: RMII to RMII Communications

Part Number: TM4C1292NCPDT

Hi,

I'm looking to use the TM4C1292NCPDT in an ethernet switch device.  Will this microcontroller support direct MAC to MAC connection with a device such as the KSZ9897R or is the use of a standalone PHY required?

Thanks,

Joe

  • Hi,
The TM4C1292NCPDT does not have the on-chip PHY. Normally, you will need to have an external PHY that will interface to the MCU using either the MII or RMII interface. Looks like the KSZ9879R has two configurable MII/RMII ports so you should be able to connect to one of these ports directly. Since we are not experts of the Microchip Ethernet switch, it will be better if you can consult them for technical details such as if a PHY is needed in between.
  • Hi Charles,

My intention was to connect MAC to MAC in a crossover configuration.  I am hoping to avoid the extra expense, size, and power of the standalone PHY which is why I am looking at using the TM4C1292 over the TM4C1294.  What is the software impact of this configuration?  Is there any software/driver support for this configuration?

    Thanks,

    Joe

  • Hi Joseph,
Here is a link to a TI reference design that uses TM4C129 with an external PHY connected via the MII interface. Hopefully this example will help you get started. www.ti.com/.../TIDA-00226
  • Hi Charles,

Thanks for the response.  I have been pulled to another project but will review this information when I get another opportunity.

    Thanks,

    Joe
