TM4C1294NCPDT: From Tiva C to SimpleLink

Part Number: TM4C1294NCPDT
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SW-TM4C

Hi Folks,

I would like to develop a new Ethernet based application so after a long time, i checked the TI market and I faced that TivaC series controllers have been "degraded" to "Other microcontrollers". I wanted to download a new version of TivaWare driver library (2.1.4.178 is that I have), but I could not found any download option too, however I also found that some TivaC and SimpleLink have exactly same footprint and peripherial set / structure.

So the questions:

  1. Can anybody explain me these product evaluation?
  2. Can I download the Driver lib if I reinstall my machine, or whatever reason I lost it?
  3. Can I develop applications based on TivaC controllers or do they lost from the market in the near future?

Regards,

Norbert

  • Hello Norbert,

We haven't been degraded nor do we have any plans to exit the market with TM4C at any point. Tiva is here to stay for a long time. The whole "Other MCU" move was partially because Tiva just fell into a bit of an odd case of not fitting any of the other large buckets and partially to minimize the amount of pages our customers have to visit to view TI's offerings. It is not meant to portray that Tiva is going away. We were just trying to simplify our web pages.

Regarding SimpleLink specifically, TM4C MCU's are not planned to be brought into SimpleLink software platform. If you want to move forward with SimpleLink, the MSP432E4 is what you will want to look at as that device is designed to work around the SimpleLink platform.

Regarding DriverLib, I am not clear fully what you mean, are you saying links for http://www.ti.com/tool/SW-TM4C are not working for you? If so we will have those looked into ASAP. 2.1.4.178 is the latest version though. I can state that we are planning to have another update, but it won't be out for a while as we have open bugs to resolve still and we want to roll those into one large update rather than make everyone update multiple times in a short time frame.

So in summary, you can develop with Tiva C MCU's as they are going to be around for a long time to come, unless you want to use the SimpleLink portfolio at which point the MSP432E4 would be a good fit for you.

Please let me know if you have other concerns, I'd be happy to address them so you can feel confident in using our TM4C devices for many years to come!
  • Hi Ralph,

Thank you very much your answers, they were very useful.
Regarding the driver lib problem: yes, the link dowsn't work for me, I don't see any download option to access the DriverLib.
Can you point me an option to download the current latest release?
Do you have any idea, when do you release the latest version?

    Regards,
    Norbert
  • Hello Norbert,

I checked through our SW-TM4C page but had no issues downloading.

Are you able to access this page? software-dl.ti.com/.../index_FDS.html

If so, please try and download either SW-TM4C-2.1.4.178.exe for the full TivaWare release or SW-TM4C-DRL-2.1.4.178.exe for just the Driver Library.

If that doesn't work, let me know which OS and Browser you are on. I am using Windows 10 and Google Chrome.

As far as the release date, I can safely say next year, but we don't have a target set fully. My hope is in the first half of the year if all goes well.
