Reliable Micro-controller

Hi all,

Which one of the MCs manufactured by TI are the most reliable ones? I am essentially looking to automate evaporative cooling system with a micro controller. I require one humidity, and three temperature inputs essentially, and drive a relay as my final output.

Which MC will be the most reliable and economical for this application? Something more than for a university student..an industrial grade controller.

Thank you.

  • Hello Qasim,

What are the temperature ranges you need for the MCU? That'd be a big determining factor. Industrial officially is -40 to 100 C.

TM4C MCU's can range from -40 to 85 C, or if you purchase the extended temperature range devices, -40 to 105 C which covers the Industrial requirements.

MSP430's are typically in the -40 to 85 C range. I would have to ask an MSP expert to comment if they have parts which cover the official industrial range, if you want to know I will do so.

C2000 MCU's are usually in the -40 to 105 C or -40 to 125 C range and thus suitable for Industrial as well.

If you don't need any unique peripherals such as CAN, USB, etc. but just some GPIOs and I2C/SPI/UART ports, you probably will find MSP430 to be a good cost device with plenty of functionality.
  • Hi Ralph,

Thank you for the swift response. I am looking to operate essentially between -0-50 C. But all the other aspects like reliability, repeatability and MTBF, all need to be of the industrial grade. I am essentially looking to use these for designing my own controller, which will control some critical operations in the plant room.

If you have a functional safety standard to meet perhaps the Hercules MCUs for functional safety

  • Hello Qasim,

We target Industrial applications with all our MCU's so all of them are well suited for your application and will give you the reliability/repeatability etc. so really you need to decide which MCU family offers the functionality and cost you want as all of them will be suitable to your application based on what you have described.
