TMS570LC4357: can this microcontroller be classified "simple"?

Part Number: TMS570LC4357

Hello,

I am required to follow the guidance of CM-SWCEH-001 which has been published by a certification authority (EASA) in aviation.

See Section 9.3.1 of the guidance material which defines three (3) categories for COTS Microcontroller; simple, complex, and highly complex.

Does TMS570LC4357 have any features that prevent us from determining the classification as "simple"?

The referenced guidance is available from EASA website below:

Best regards,

Akai

  • Hello Akai,

It is best to get an opinion from a functional safety assessor about the correct classification for TMS570 microcontrollers. These parts do have multiple bus masters that go through a bus switch matrix to access the desired target slaves, so in my opinion it would qualify as a "highly complex" part.

    Sunil

  • I agree with Sunil.

Looks like 1). and 3). apply in this case.  Highly Complex.

If a COTS microcontroller has any of the following characteristics, it should be classified as Highly Complex:

more than one Central Processing Unit (CPU) are embedded and they use the same bus (which is not strictly separated or which uses the same single port memory),

several controllers of complex peripherals are dependent on each other and exchange data,

several internal busses are integrated and are used in a dynamic way (for example, a dynamic bus switch matrix).

  • Thank you for quick response, Sunil.

In case of a highly complex COTS microcontroller, TI's private data (not public data) could be required in order to present the right level of confidence of documentation to EASA. I think the typical example is Activity #12 specified in Section 9.3.6 of EASA Cert Memo 001 (I assume that TMS570LC4357-EP is not yet mature; therefore it would not be appropriate to be classified "Sufficient PSE" per difinition of Section 9.3.7).

Could you please advise how I can request the TI's support to complete all activities for Level A application specified in Section 9.3.13?

    Best regards,

    Akai

  • Akai-san,

A bit of rethink - I think the "highly-complex" classification is reserved for multi-core processors with shared resources shared across multiple bus matrices. TMS570LC43x MCUs will qualify as "complex" parts in my opinion.

It is important to get a more informed opinion from a functional safety assessor.

    Regards,

    Sunil
