TMS570LS0432: purpose of CAN connections

Hi, I am a beginner with BMS designs and TI tools.

I'm using the bq76PL455A for battery management, with board to board communication through daisy-chain. I would like to use TMS570LS0432 as the MCU for my design.

With this in mind, I am looking through the use case scenario document as a reference: http://www.ti.com/lit/an/slua785/slua785.pdf. On page 19 (Figure 16) of this document, the entire circuitry is dedicated to CAN connection. What is the purpose of using the CAN connection in this case?

Hi Kan,

The CAN is used to communicate with the host (for example a PC machine).

Thank you, it is possible to somehow make the communication to be done through some other type of connectors, i.e. USB or micro-USB, etc?

Hello Kan,

For communication between host and TMS570LS042, you can use SCI through micro-usb. The problem is that TMS570LS0432 has only 1 SCI which is used to interface bq76PL455.

So is there a way to solve this problem? Since I also need SCI to interface with bq76PL455.

Thank you! My purpose is to use an external programmer to flash the code onto the TMS570LS0432 chip, and then make a GUI to allow modification of certain variables later on. So on the PCB, I plan to have the TMS570LS0432 chip, a connector for the programmer, and a MicroUSB port for connection to the GUI on a computer. Is this setup possible in this case?

If you use SCI to interface BQ76, you need to use NHET emulated SCI to communication with host.

On HDK and Launchpad, the SCI_TX and SCI_TX are connected to FTDI which routes those signals to microUSB. On your PCB, you can connect 2 N2HET signals (0 and 2) to FTDI as 2nd options, and add jumpers to choose which SCI (SCI or NHET emulated SCI) is used for host.
